Product Description
Sweater in Sirdar Cotton DK 7824
What is Being Made
This is a classic knitted sweater designed in Sirdar Cotton DK yarn, offering a versatile wardrobe staple suitable for a range of sizes. The pattern includes six size options, accommodating bust measurements from 81/86 cm (32/34 inches) up to 132/137 cm (52/54 inches), making it accessible for various body types. The sweater features a full length ranging from 55 cm to 68 cm depending on size, with adjustable sleeve lengths to customize the fit to individual preferences.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental sweater construction techniques. The garment is worked using the zig zag pattern, a textured stitch pattern that adds visual interest to the finished piece. The pattern requires working with two different needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction: larger needles for the main fabric and smaller needles for ribbed sections, which is a standard approach in sweater knitting to create fitted edges that hold their shape.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in this design is the zig zag pattern, which is worked over 28 stitches and creates a distinctive textured appearance. This stitch pattern is combined with ribbing, typically used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline areas to provide elasticity and a neat, finished look. The use of these complementary stitch patterns—textured zig zag for the body and elastic ribbing for the edges—demonstrates classic sweater design principles.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This sweater is designed to be worked in Sirdar Cotton DK yarn, specifically shade 528. The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 5 balls of 100g (approximately 500 grams) for the smallest sizes up to 8 balls of 100g (approximately 800 grams) for the largest size. The pattern notes that the yarn is also suitable for several alternative DK-weight options, including Amalfi DK, Beachcomber DK, Country Style DK, Harrap Tweed DK, Soukie DK, and Wash 'n' Wear Double Crepe DK, though amounts may vary depending on the specific yarn chosen.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires two pairs of knitting needles in different sizes to achieve the correct tension and construction. You will need a pair of 4mm (UK8 – USA6) knitting needles for working the main fabric and zig zag pattern, and a pair of 3¼mm (UK10 – USA3) knitting needles for the ribbed sections. Additionally, stitch holders are required to hold stitches temporarily during construction, a standard notional item for sweater knitting.
Gauge and Tension
Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The zig zag pattern, measured over 28 stitches, should measure 11 cm (4¼ inches) when worked on 4mm needles. Knitters should adjust their needle size as needed to achieve the specified tension, as this directly impacts the final measurements and fit of the completed sweater.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate level, indicating it is suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The combination of textured stitch patterns, multiple needle sizes, and the need to manage multiple stitches simultaneously makes this an appropriate challenge for those who have completed several basic projects and are ready to develop their skills further.

GREAT
GREAT QUALITY, GOOD VALUE, LOVELY TO KNIT WITH.
Great crafts
Great pattern but I haven't yet made use of it.
I had previously over bought by 4 balls of Sirdar Stories 'Beach Club', that and it seems to knit up very economically. All I needed to do was order another 6 balls to start another project, which I was able to do. When this further 6 balls arrived they are from the same dye lot as my original 'over order' and to top it all they have been reduced by 20%. Three little wins - thank you!
Great choice of free patterns, and special offers available on materials
