Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK Sweater and Cardigan – Pattern 9794 Summary

Pattern 9794 from Stylecraft is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern containing two classic designs: a pullover sweater and a cardigan, both worked in Highland Heathers DK yarn. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty and is sized to fit a wide range of bust measurements, from 81–86 cm (32–34 in) up to 122–127 cm (48–50 in), making it an inclusive, versatile pattern that caters to a broad range of knitters. Both garments share a similar construction approach and yarn base, giving knitters the option to make either a cosy pullover or a practical open-front cardigan from the same pattern booklet.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The pattern offers five sizes across both designs. For the sweater, the actual finished bust measurements range from 95 cm (37½ in) to 137 cm (54 in), incorporating positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. Full length ranges from 57 cm (22½ in) to 69 cm (27¼ in), and sleeve length ranges from approximately 41–49 cm (16–19¼ in) depending on size. Knitters are encouraged to circle their chosen size on the pattern sheet to avoid confusion when working through the multi-size instructions.

Design One: The Sweater

Construction and Shaping

The sweater is worked in separate pieces — back, front, and sleeves — and then seamed together. This traditional set-in or drop-shoulder construction is well suited to intermediate knitters who are comfortable with basic garment shaping but may not yet be ready for more complex techniques such as top-down or seamless knitting. The straightforward structure makes it an excellent project for those looking to build confidence in knitting garments.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Rib stitch – The welt and cuffs begin with a k1, p1 rib, worked on 3¼ mm needles. This creates a neat, stretchy border that helps the garment retain its shape at the hem and sleeve edges.
  • Stocking stitch (st-st) – The main body and sleeves are worked in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles, alternating knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side. Stocking stitch produces a smooth, classic fabric that showcases the tonal, heathered qualities of the Highland Heathers DK yarn beautifully.
  • Contrast colour ribbing – The cast-on row and initial rib rows are worked in a contrast colour (C) before the main colour (M) is joined, adding a subtle but stylish two-tone detail at the welts and cuffs. This is a simple yet effective design touch that elevates the finished look.
  • Thumb method cast-on – The pattern specifies the thumb method cast-on, which creates a neat, elastic edge well suited to ribbed borders.

Yarn and Materials

The sweater is knitted in Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK, a double knitting weight yarn sold in 100 g balls. The DK weight makes this a satisfying project that knits up at a good pace without being too bulky. The yarn's heathered colourway adds depth and visual interest to even the simplest stitch patterns. 3¼ mm and 4 mm knitting needles are required. A contrast colour is used for the rib borders, so knitters will need at least two shades of Highland Heathers DK.

Design Two: The Cardigan

Construction and Shaping

The cardigan is the second design included in pattern 9794 and shares the same yarn, needle sizes, and size range as the sweater. Like the pullover, it is constructed in separate pieces and seamed. The open-front design makes the cardigan a highly practical layering piece, suitable for everyday wear across a range of seasons. The cardigan format also makes it a popular choice for those who prefer a more versatile, easy-to-wear garment over a pullover.

No problems

This is my first attempt at fairisle, only two colours, a good starter pattern. It doesn’t have a plan of the pattern to follow which would have been useful. I drew my own on squared paper so that I could see the pattern clearly.
