Actual finished chest measurements range from approximately 22 to 32 inches (56–81 cm), with a length to back neck of 14 to 21 inches (35.5–53.5 cm) and sleeve lengths from 6½ to 14 inches (16.5–35.5 cm).

Jacket with Collar

The Jacket with Collar is shown in Denim (shade 1302) and requires between 3 and 5 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran 100g. It shares the same finished dimensions and toggle-button fastening as the hooded version but features a more structured collar finish, offering a slightly smarter look while retaining the warmth and texture of Aran-weight knitting. Like its hooded counterpart, it uses 6 or 7 toggle buttons depending on the size.

Sweater

The Sweater is presented in Fondant (shade 1241) and is the most yarn-efficient of the three designs, requiring just 2 to 4 balls of Stylecraft Special Aran 100g. It shares the same actual chest and sleeve measurements as the jackets but has a slightly shorter length to back neck, ranging from 12 to 19 inches (30.5–48 cm). As a pullover, it is a straightforward project for an intermediate knitter looking to practise Aran stitch patterns without the added complexity of a button band or hood construction.

Techniques and Construction

All three garments make use of classic Aran knitting techniques, a tradition rooted in the heavily textured, cable-rich fabrics associated with the Aran Islands. The patterns combine several stitch structures to create the characteristic raised, sculptural surface of Aran knitwear. Key techniques used throughout include:

• Cable 4 Front (C4F): Two stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held at the front of the work, the next two stitches are knitted from the left-hand needle, and then the two stitches from the cable needle are knitted. This produces a cable that twists to the left.
• Cable 4 Back (C4B): Two stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held at the back of the work before knitting in the same sequence. This produces a cable that twists to the right.
• Twist 4 Left (T4L): Two stitches are slipped to a cable needle held at the front, the next two stitches are purled from the left-hand needle, and then the cable needle stitches are knitted. This creates a travelling cable moving to the left across a purl background.
• Twist 4 Right (T4R): Two stitches are slipped to a cable needle held at the back, the next two stitches are knitted, and then the cable needle stitches are purled. This creates a travelling cable moving to the right.
