In November 2021 I came up with a variation on this design, and I have now updated the pattern to include the variation.
The inspiration for this blanket came from my love of knitting mitred squares. These types of projects are so wonderful, but can be cumbersome and difficult to transport as they grow larger.
I began to ponder on the thought of knitting a blanket in smaller, bite sized pieces. Something that you could theme as you wish and would fit into a small project bag.
The Stitch In Time blanket is made up of 12 blocks that I knitted to reflect the months of the year. I then gave them all a border and seamed them together.
The blanket is easy to customise to your own size requirements and perfect for the beginner knitter.
The squares are knitted from scraps of fingering weight yarn so is a perfect project for those leftovers that we all have.
The pattern includes full written instructions, instructional photos and a number of video tutorials.

What Is Being Made
The Stitch In Time is a modular knitted blanket composed of 12 individual mitred square blocks that are seamed together. This design allows crafters to create a complete blanket by knitting smaller, portable pieces rather than working on one large project. Each block can be themed with colours representing the 12 months of the year, making this blanket both a functional textile and a creative expression of seasonal colour palettes.
Design and Construction Method
The blanket uses a mitred square construction technique, where each square is knitted as an independent unit. After all 12 blocks are completed, they are bordered individually and then seamed together to form the finished blanket. This modular approach offers significant practical advantages: the small blocks are easy to transport in a project bag, making this an ideal pattern for knitters who prefer working on portable pieces. The design is highly customisable, allowing knitters to adjust the overall blanket size by varying the number of blocks or modifying dimensions to suit their specific requirements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs the mitred square technique, a classic knitting method that creates perfectly angled corners through strategic decreasing. Mitred squares are worked from the centre outward or use a specific decrease sequence to form the characteristic diagonal lines and neat corners. The technique is accessible to both new and experienced knitters, making this blanket suitable for a wide range of skill levels. Seaming is used to join the completed blocks together, requiring basic finishing skills.
Yarn and Materials
The Stitch In Time blanket requires approximately 500 grams of fingering weight yarn scraps, with each individual mitred square using approximately 4 grams of yarn. Fingering weight yarn (also known as 4-ply) is a thin, delicate yarn that creates fine, detailed fabric. The pattern is worked on 2.5mm needles (US size 1.5), and the designer recommends using 2 double pointed needles to knit each mitred square. This needle choice is practical for the modular construction, as double pointed needles are well-suited to working small, contained pieces.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, the Stitch In Time blanket is designed to welcome new knitters while remaining engaging for experienced crafters. The modular nature of the project breaks the work into manageable segments, and the mitred square technique, while requiring attention to decreasing sequences, is a fundamental skill that beginners can master with practice.
