Stars in Line Knickers
What is Being Made
Stars in Line Knickers is a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create fitted knickers (underwear garments) for infants. The pattern is available in two sizes: to fit ages 0-6 months and 6-12 months. This is a practical baby garment project suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed exclusively for knitting. The garment is constructed primarily using the fundamental knitting technique of stocking stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for delicate baby clothing. The pattern incorporates shaping techniques including increases and decreases to achieve the fitted silhouette required for knickers. A crochet hook is used as a finishing tool for elastic application at the waist, making this a hybrid project that combines both knitting and basic crochet finishing methods.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (st st) – the primary stitch throughout the garment, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric
- Knit stitch (k) – fundamental stitch used in the knit rows of stocking stitch
- Purl stitch (p) – fundamental stitch used in the purl rows of stocking stitch
- Make 1 stitch (m1) – an increase technique used for shaping, created by picking up the loop lying before the next stitch and working into the back of it
- Decrease (dec) – shaping technique used to reduce stitch count where needed
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires Sirdar Snuggly 4 ply yarn in a single color. The yardage needed is minimal: only 1 ball of 50 grams per size, providing 226 meters (247 yards) of yarn. Knitting is worked on 3¼ mm needles, while a 2½ mm crochet hook is needed for the waist finishing. Additionally, waist length elastic is required to complete the garment and ensure a secure fit around the baby's waist.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 centimeters over stocking stitch using 3¼ mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit in baby garments, ensuring the knickers will be appropriately sized for the intended age range.
