Spiral Mitts Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

Spiral Mitts are fingerless crochet mitts designed by Janferie MacKintosh of The Crafty Therapist. These charming accessories feature a distinctive spiral shell pattern that creates an eye-catching visual design. The mitts are part of a larger Spiral series collection, with matching items available. The finished mitts measure approximately 3.5 inches in width and 7 inches in length, with sizing that is adjustable to suit different hand dimensions.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Spiral Mitts pattern employs a simple yet effective spiral shell stitch technique as its foundation. This repeating motif creates the signature textured appearance that makes these mitts visually distinctive. The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches and techniques suitable for crafters developing their skills.

Key stitches and abbreviations used in this pattern include:

  • Chain (Ch) – the foundational stitch used to create the base of the project
  • Slip stitch (Sl st) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Skip (Sk) – used to create shaping and pattern definition
  • Stitch (St) and Stitches (Sts) – the individual loops that form the fabric

The pattern is written in both US and UK crochet terminology, allowing crafters to work with their preferred terminology system.

Materials and Tools Required

The Spiral Mitts pattern calls for aran or worsted weight yarn, with less than 100 grams needed to complete the project. The recommended yarn is Hobbycraft Women's Institute Soft & Smooth Aran, which is composed of 100% acrylic fiber. This yarn choice is recommended specifically because it is beautifully soft and features anti-pilling properties, ensuring that the finished mitts maintain their appearance and quality through extended wear and washing.

Crochet hooks required include:

  • US Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook
  • US Size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook

Additional materials needed are a yarn needle for weaving in ends and a stitch marker for tracking pattern rounds and stitch placement.

Skill Level and Difficulty

The Spiral Mitts pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for crocheters who are new to the craft or looking for a straightforward project to build confidence. The simple spiral shell stitch repeats throughout the pattern, allowing crafters to develop consistency and rhythm in their stitching while creating a professionally finished accessory.
