Product Description

This cowl showcases beautiful variegated yarn. I couldn’t choose only one texture to use because I wanted to celebrate the lovely variety of looks these yarns can create: the spice of life. The light, textural stripes are opened up with dropped stitch ladders. Whilst not identical due to the alternating bands, the cowl is fully reversible. It is grafted for a seamless finish; this is an interesting intermediate project. 50g of yarn will make a narrow cowl, 70g makes the medium size (pictured) and 100g will give you a luxuriously wider version. Use a semi-solid shade for a subtler effect. All sizes can be worn simply round the neck, or twisted up double as a pretty neck warmer. M & L sizes can also be opened out and worn round the shoulders, showing off the yarn and stitch pattern more fully.

What is Being Made

The Spice of Life Cowl is a versatile knitted cowl designed to showcase the natural beauty of variegated yarn. This seamless neck accessory celebrates the variety of textures and colors that variegated yarns can create. The cowl is available in three sizes: Small (17cm/6.5" wide x 120cm/47" long), Medium (25cm/10" wide x 120cm/47" long), and Large (33cm/13" wide x 120cm/47" long). The design offers flexibility in yarn quantity, with 50g creating a narrow cowl, 70g producing the medium size, and 100g yielding a luxuriously wider version. Additionally, the cowl can be twisted and worn double as a pretty neck warmer for added versatility.

Techniques Used

This cowl employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques that make it an interesting and engaging project. The primary construction method involves grafting, which creates a seamless finish when joining the cowl into a circle. This technique requires careful attention and skill to execute properly. The design also features dropped stitch ladders, which are intentional openings in the fabric that add textural interest and lightness to the piece. These dropped stitches create decorative vertical lines that allow the variegated yarn colors to shine through while maintaining the structural integrity of the cowl.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While the PDF does not specify exact stitch abbreviations, the cowl incorporates textural stripes created through varied knitting techniques. The dropped stitch ladders are a key design element, creating open, lacy sections that contrast with the solid knitted areas. These textural stripes are described as light and airy, suggesting the use of techniques that create visual interest without adding excessive bulk to the finished piece.

Design Philosophy

The Spice of Life Cowl celebrates the concept that variety creates beauty. Designer Louise Zass-Bangham chose to incorporate multiple textures and visual elements rather than limiting the design to a single stitch pattern or texture. This approach allows the natural variegation of the yarn to be the star of the project, with the dropped stitch ladders and textural stripes providing structure and visual interest without overwhelming the yarn's inherent color variations. The seamless grafting finish adds a professional, polished quality to the completed cowl.
