Product Description
This space rocket cushion has a little pocket on the back to carry the astronaut into space adventures. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the toys are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). Worked in stockinette, the astronaut and rocket use intarsia colour-work. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Space Rocket and Astronaut Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern by Amanda Berry creates a charming space-themed set comprising a rocket cushion and a companion astronaut toy. The pattern is designed for intermediate knitters and produces soft, cuddly pieces perfect for children's rooms or as decorative cushions. The rocket features a clever pocket design on the back specifically created to hold the small astronaut figure, making this a playful interactive craft project.
What You'll Make
- Space Rocket Cushion: A three-dimensional rocket shape with a functional pocket on the back designed to store and display the accompanying astronaut toy
- Astronaut Toy: A small stuffed figure companion piece that fits perfectly into the rocket's back pocket
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction uses basic knit stitches as the foundation, with k2tog (knit two together) decreases featured in the pattern abbreviations for shaping the three-dimensional forms. The pattern incorporates intarsia colour-work, a technique for working with multiple yarn colors to create detailed designs and patterns within the knitted fabric. Bobbins are used to manage the separate yarn colors during intarsia work, allowing for clean color transitions and detailed stitch work. Seaming techniques are employed to join the various knitted pieces together, using a darning or tapestry needle to create neat, invisible seams that give the finished pieces their polished appearance.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply), which is a versatile medium weight suitable for creating fabric with good stitch definition. You will need approximately 100g skeins in three colors: White, Red, and Blue, plus an additional 2 metres of black DK yarn for embroidered details. The sample shown was knitted using Stylecraft Special DK, a 100% acrylic yarn in the specific shades of White, Matador Red, and Cloud Blue, though any similar DK weight acrylic yarn works well for this pattern.
Tools and Notions
- Needles: A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 25cm
- Notions: A stitch holder for managing stitches during construction
- Seaming: A darning or tapestry needle for joining pieces together
- Stuffing: A 250g bag of toy filling to create the three-dimensional, cushioned effect in both the rocket and astronaut
- Embellishments: Two 6mm diameter black buttons for details
- Colour-work: Bobbins for managing yarn colors during intarsia colour-work sections
Yarn Weight and Gauge Considerations
The DK weight yarn specified creates a fabric with excellent stitch definition, making it ideal for displaying the intarsia colour-work details and embroidered features. This weight also provides enough body to the finished pieces so they hold their shape well when stuffed with toy filling, whether creating the cushion or the smaller astronaut figure.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document, making it easy to access, print, and reference while working on your project. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and detailed instructions for both the rocket cushion and astronaut toy components.
