Show your Irish Spirit by wearing a Shamrock Pin! Quick to knit, fun to share. Wear it on your lapel, or pinned to a hat! Directions include 4 sizes of shamrocks.

Finished shamrock is (4”, 3.5”, 2.5”, 2”) wide. Yarn: Small amounts of (worsted weight, dk weight, sock weight or lace weight), depending on the size pin you’d like to make. I didn't include a gauge - by the time you were done knitting a gauge swatch, you could have knitted the whole shamrock. Gauge isn't so important on a pin. For skills, you'll be using short rows (wrap and turn) a 3-needle bind-off and I cord.

Shamrock and Four Leaf Clover Pin by Cheryl Andrews

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates decorative shamrock and four leaf clover pins designed to showcase Irish spirit. The project produces wearable jewelry pieces that can be pinned to lapels, hats, or other accessories. The pattern includes instructions for four different finished sizes: 4 inches wide, 3.5 inches wide, 2.5 inches wide, and 2 inches wide, allowing crafters to customize their finished piece based on preference and available materials.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The shamrock pin is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs a knit-on cast on method to begin the project, distributing stitches across multiple double-pointed needles. The design utilizes a three-needle or four-needle construction depending on whether crafters are making a shamrock (three leaves) or four leaf clover (four leaves). The pattern is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, creating a dimensional, sculptural form. After knitting is complete, the finished piece is sewn onto pin backing hardware using needle and thread, transforming the knitted element into functional jewelry.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs basic knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch work involves knit stitches, as indicated by the knit-on cast on method and the foundational construction. The pattern creates a three-dimensional leaf structure through strategic stitch placement and shaping across the distributed needles, though specific stitch abbreviations and detailed row-by-row instructions are contained within the complete PDF pattern.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires only small amounts of yarn, making it an economical choice for crafters. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights to suit different needle sizes and finished dimensions:

  • Worsted weight yarn – paired with size 7 needles for the largest 4-inch pin
  • DK weight yarn – used with size 4 needles for the 3.5-inch size
  • Sock weight yarn – worked on size 2 needles for the 2.5-inch pin
  • Lace weight yarn – paired with size 1 needles for the smallest 2-inch pin

The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted weight yarn in the color Limeade, worked on size 7 needles. In addition to yarn and needles, crafters will need pin backing hardware (available at craft stores) and needle and thread to attach the knitted shamrock to the backing.

Tools Required

Construction requires a set of 5 double-pointed needles in the appropriate size for the chosen yarn weight. Needle size selection ranges from size 7 for worsted weight through size 1 for lace weight. Additional tools include standard sewing supplies – a needle and thread – to permanently attach the completed knitted shamrock to the pin backing hardware.
