Product Description
Cushion cover in just two colours – ideal for practising technique.
Tension is not crucial.
Ordering information for both Jamieson & Smith and for Jamieson's of Shetland is included.
The cover is knitted as two circles which are joined together to make a round cushion cover which can be filled with a cushion pad, clean wool or trimmings from other Fair Isle projects.
Two identical sides needs approx 60g of background colour and approx 50g of contrast colour.
Last photo shows how using different colours changes the appearance. These covers were knitted to use up tiny amounts of many colours left over from other projects.
Scaddiman Cushion Cover by Hazel Tindall
What is Being Made
The Scaddiman Cushion Cover is a round knitted cushion cover designed by Hazel Tindall and inspired by traditional Shetland berets. The design takes its name from "Scaddiman," which is Shetland dialect for sea urchin – the textured centre of the cover evokes the appearance of a sea urchin's spiky form. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a decorative home accessory suitable for adding texture and visual interest to any interior space.
Construction Method
The cushion cover is constructed as two separate circular pieces that are knitted individually and then joined together before the final blocking stage. This two-piece construction allows for easier handling during the knitting process and provides flexibility in assembly. The cover is knitted in the round, a technique that creates seamless circular fabric and is particularly well-suited to this cushion design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This is an advanced-level knitting pattern that employs charted stitch patterns to create the distinctive textured design. The pattern includes both written instructions and a stitch chart, allowing knitters to follow either format. The techniques required are suitable for experienced knitters comfortable with reading charts and working in the round. The traditional Shetland beret inspiration suggests the use of classic knitting methods rooted in heritage textile craftsmanship.
Materials
The Scaddiman Cushion Cover is worked in 4-ply yarn, a lightweight and versatile yarn weight that produces fine, detailed fabric ideal for displaying stitch definition in charted patterns. Appropriate knitting needles for 4-ply yarn are required to achieve the correct gauge and fabric density.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes comprehensive knitting instructions across multiple pages, supplementary photography, and a detailed stitch chart for reference during knitting.
