Product Description

This easy to make, textured granny square with a flower motif in the centre is inspired by my other design, the Sakura Face Scrubbies.

The pattern is using front post and back post stitches to create a nice, textured look.

Finished size of the square is approx. 5”x 5”, which can be used to make a big, granny square blanket.

I used DK yarn, but you can use any yarn and use as many colours as you want

I hope you’ll enjoy this little project!

Happy crocheting!

Sakura Granny Square by K.A.M.E. Crochet

What Is Being Made

The Sakura Granny Square is a decorative crochet square motif measuring 5" x 5". This finished project is ideal for crafters seeking to create individual decorative elements that can be used in larger projects such as blankets, afghans, or other assembled crochet compositions. The design draws inspiration from sakura (cherry blossom) aesthetics, making it a charming and thematic addition to any crocheted collection.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as Easy, this pattern is designed for beginner crocheters. The straightforward construction and use of fundamental crochet techniques make it an excellent introductory project for those new to granny square patterns or crochet in general.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Sakura Granny Square employs several essential crochet techniques that build foundational skills. The pattern utilizes magic ring construction as a starting point, which is a popular method for creating seamless centers in circular or square motifs. Post stitches are incorporated throughout the design, including both front post and back post variations, which add texture and dimensional interest to the finished square. These post stitch techniques involve working around the vertical post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops, creating a raised, sculptural effect that enhances the visual appeal of the motif.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes a variety of fundamental crochet stitches:

  • Magic Ring (MR) – Used to create the center starting point
  • Chain (CH) – Basic foundation stitch for spacing and structure
  • Slip Stitch (SLST) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Single Crochet (SC) – A basic short stitch for tight, dense fabric
  • Back Post Single Crochet (BPSC) – Single crochet worked around the back post of previous stitches
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) – A medium-height stitch providing balanced fabric density
  • Back Post Half Double Crochet (BPHDC) – Half double crochet variation worked around the back post
  • Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch creating more open, airy fabric sections
  • Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) – Double crochet worked around the front post for dimensional texture
  • Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) – Double crochet worked around the back post for textured effects

The pattern also includes repeat instructions marked with asterisks (*-*) to indicate sections that are worked multiple times throughout the design.

Materials Required

Completing the Sakura Granny Square requires minimal materials, making it an economical and accessible project. The pattern calls for approximately 10-12 grams of DK weight yarn in the color or colors of your choice. A 4 mm (size G) crochet hook is used to work with the DK yarn at the appropriate gauge. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in loose ends and scissors for cutting yarn. The modest yardage requirement means this project is ideal for using up yarn scraps or sampling different colors.
