Safe and Warm Mug Warmers – Cabled Knit Mug Cozies in Valley Yarns Haydenville DK

Designed by Julie Turjoman and Susan Baron, the Safe and Warm Mug Warmers pattern (pattern number 1064) is a charming and purposeful knitting project that produces cozy, cabled mug cozies sized to fit standard mugs. This downloadable PDF pattern is published under the Valley Yarns brand and carries a meaningful cause: a portion of each purchase supports Safe Passage, an organization well known for the Northampton Hot Chocolate Run that provides resources, support, and safety planning assistance for survivors of domestic violence. Knitting these little gifts is truly a way to show love on multiple levels.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces mug cozies — snug, decorative fabric sleeves that wrap around a mug to keep hands comfortable and drinks warmer for longer. The pattern includes two distinct cable designs, each resulting in a slightly different finished cozy. Both designs are worked flat (back and forth in rows) and fastened with a button closure, making them easy to slip on and off any mug. They make excellent handmade gifts and quick project finishes.

Hugs and Kisses Cozy

The first design features the classic Hugs and Kisses Cable pattern, a traditional cable motif worked over a 16-row repeat. The finished cozy measures 3¾ inches in height and 8 inches or 10½ inches in length, corresponding to mugs with a 10½ inch or 12½ inch circumference. The cable repeat is worked three to four additional times after the initial setup, creating a richly textured fabric that wraps beautifully around a mug.

Hearts Cozy

The second design uses a Hearts Cable pattern, giving the cozy a more romantic and decorative appearance — particularly fitting as a gift. The Hearts cozy is slightly more compact, measuring 3 inches or 3¾ inches in height and 8 inches or 10½ inches in length in the two sizes. Both designs share the same general construction approach and finishing method.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat: Both cozy designs are knitted back and forth in rows on straight needles, making them very accessible for knitters who prefer flat construction over working in the round.
  • Cables: The central design element of both cozies is cable knitting, which involves crossing groups of stitches over one another using a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like or heart-shaped textured patterns. Cables are a classic knitting technique that adds visual interest and a slight structural density to the fabric.
  • Buttonhole: Each cozy includes a buttonhole worked into the knitting to accommodate a 1-inch button closure, allowing the cozy to be fastened securely around the mug.
  • Garter stitch edging: A garter stitch border is maintained along the edges throughout the pattern, providing a neat, non-curling frame for the cable panels.
  • I-Cord: The pattern calls for the use of double-pointed needles (dpns) to work an I-cord, a small tubular knitted cord used as a finishing or closure element.
  • Bind off knitwise: The finishing row is worked as a standard knitwise bind off, giving the edge a clean, structured appearance.
  • Decreases: A decrease row using k2tog (knit two together) is worked before the final bind off to shape the end of the cozy neatly.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) — the fundamental building blocks of all the stitch patterns in this project
  • Garter stitch — used for the side edgings throughout both cozy designs
  • Hugs and Kisses Cable pattern — a 16-row cable repeat forming the central texture of the first cozy
  • Hearts Cable pattern — a cable repeat forming the decorative heart motif of the second cozy
