Product Description

Rew Ha Tan is a modular Tunisian crochet blanket featuring 10 textural stitch patterns. Use as many or as few of them as you like and arrange them how you want!

My sample used 4ply/fingering weight yarn to make 8 x 10 blocks of 24 sts x 20 rows - but the pattern is designed for you to be able to use any weight of yarn and make any size of block/blanket that you wish.

The blanket starts with the bottom left hand square and then is worked to the opposite corner using a join-as-you-go method.

There is an optional Moss stitch border to finish the blanket.

You do not need a Tunisian crochet hook for this pattern - the shaft of your hook just needs to be long enough to accommodate the number of stitches in your block.

This pattern has been tested and tech edited.

What is Being Made

The Rew Ha Tan Blanket is a modular crochet blanket designed as a beginner-friendly project that combines multiple individual blocks into a finished throw. The sample blanket measures 84 x 90cm and is constructed from 8 x 10 squares worked separately and assembled together. This design is particularly well-suited to crafters working with mini skeins and leftover yarn, allowing for creative color combinations and stash busting. The blanket features a moss stitch border finishing the edges.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs a modular block construction technique, where individual squares are crocheted separately and then joined together to create the finished blanket. The blocks are worked corner-to-corner, a popular method that builds the square diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. This approach offers flexibility in blanket sizing—crafters can adjust the number of blocks and overall dimensions based on their available yarn and desired gauge. The border is worked separately using a moss stitch pattern applied around the perimeter of the assembled blocks.

Stitches Used

  • Moss stitch – used for the border, creating a textured edge approximately 2.5cm wide
  • Tunisian-style stitches – the pattern blocks utilize stitches compatible with Tunisian crochet methods, though a specialized Tunisian hook is not required

Materials and Tools

The Rew Ha Tan Blanket is designed to work with any yarn weight, including 4ply, sport, DK, worsted, heavy worsted, and aran weights. The sample shown was created using 400g of 4ply yarn in 25 different colors distributed across 10g and 20g mini skeins, with an additional 40g of 4ply yarn used for the border.

A 4.5mm crochet hook is recommended for the sample (or an appropriate size adjusted for your chosen yarn weight and desired gauge). The hook shaft must be long enough to accommodate 24 stitches per block, as this is the stitch count used in the pattern. While a thumb rest will not interfere with stitching, hooks with heavy ergonomic shaping are not advised for this project.

Gauge Information

Using 4ply yarn, a 4.5mm hook, and after steam blocking:

  • Finished blanket gauge: 8 x 10 squares = 84 x 90cm
  • Tunisian stitch swatch: 24 stitches x 20 rows = 10.5 x 9cm
  • Moss stitch border: approximately 2.5cm wide

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for newer crocheters looking to expand their skills. The modular design allows crafters to work one block at a time, making the project manageable and less overwhelming than working a large blanket all at once.
