Reshmi is a top-down crescent-shaped wrap designed by Nidhi Kansal of knidhiknits. The name "Reshmi" means silky or silken in Hindi, reflecting the luxurious drape and finish of this elegant accessory. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished wrap measuring 48 inches [122cm] in length between tips and 16 inches [40cm] in depth, making it a versatile piece suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders.

Techniques and Stitch Construction

The Reshmi wrap employs a thoughtful combination of knitting techniques to create visual interest and textural variety. The body of the wrap is predominantly worked in garter stitch, a fundamental knitting stitch that creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This classic stitch provides both structure and comfort for a wearable wrap.

The construction incorporates short row shaping, a technique that adds dimension and helps create the crescent silhouette without increasing stitch count dramatically. This method involves working back and forth across partial sections of stitches, building the curved shape gradually from the top down.

For decorative detail, the pattern uses slipped stitches worked with a contrast color to create visual patterning throughout the garter stitch body. Slipped stitches—where stitches are moved from one needle to another without working them—allow the contrast yarn to sit on the fabric surface, creating striking color effects without adding bulk.

The lace border represents a significant shift in stitch complexity, featuring an open, delicate lace motif worked in contrast colour #1. This lace section provides an airy, feminine finish that contrasts beautifully with the dense garter stitch body. The sample wrap was knitted using Sunrays Creations' Vilasa DK yarn, a luxurious fiber composition of 100% silk in 250-yard [229-meter] skeins weighing 100 grams. The actual yardage used in the sample was slightly less than the pattern recommendations: 235 yards [215 meters] of main color, 180 yards [165 meters] of contrast colour #1, and 30 yards [28 meters] of contrast colour #2. The silk fiber choice aligns perfectly with the wrap's name, delivering the silky drape and lustrous sheen that makes this design special.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern calls for US size 9 [5.5mm] needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements and ensuring the wrap drapes correctly.

Two distinct gauges apply to different sections of the wrap:

• Garter Stitch Gauge: 14 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches [10cm] after blocking
• Lace Motif Gauge: 12 stitches and 20 rows over 3.25 inches [8.25cm] after blocking

The difference in gauge between sections reflects the looser tension typically used for lace work compared to the denser garter stitch body. Blocking is essential for both sections to open up the lace pattern and set the final dimensions of the wrap.
