Product Description

This stocking uses short rows for shaping, and the reindeer has i-cord antlers and a pompom nose. This pattern is worked flat on single pointed needles (not in the round) to make it more accessible to knitters of all abilities. The hanging loop is a single crochet chain worked on a crochet hook, and the antlers are i-cord tubes worked on two DPNs. Note this is a decorative item, and is not designed to be worn. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, decreases, and seaming to finish.

What Is Being Made

This is a decorative knitted stocking featuring a reindeer design, perfect for holiday decorations. The stocking combines practical knitting techniques with charming embellishments to create a festive piece suitable for hanging or displaying during the Christmas season.

Craft and Primary Technique

The Reindeer Stocking is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The pattern is worked flat on single pointed needles, making it accessible for knitters who prefer traditional flat knitting rather than working in the round. This approach allows for straightforward construction and easier stitch management throughout the project.

Specialized Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level pattern incorporates short rows for shaping the stocking, a technique that creates three-dimensional structure without increasing or decreasing stitches in the traditional manner. Short rows allow the knitter to build depth and form, essential for creating the stocking's contoured shape. The reindeer features are enhanced with i-cord antlers, a decorative cord technique that produces dimensional embellishments standing away from the main fabric.

Stitches and Construction Details

While specific stitch-by-stitch details are not listed in the pattern overview, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques. The use of short rows demonstrates intermediate-level skill, as this method requires careful attention to turning points and tension management. The i-cord antlers add textural interest and are a signature element of the design.

Yarn Specifications

The stocking is knitted in 100% acrylic DK weight yarn, also known as double knitting or light worsted weight. The pattern requires approximately 50g each of two colors—a lighter shade and a darker shade. The original sample was created using Hayfield Bonus DK in Wheat and Chocolate, though any similar DK weight yarn in comparable colors will work effectively. DK weight yarn is an excellent choice for this project, offering good stitch definition while remaining quick to knit.

Needles and Notions Required

  • 4mm (US 6) single pointed needles, minimum length 20cm, for working the main stocking flat
  • Two 4mm (US 6) double pointed needles (DPNs) for creating the i-cord antlers
  • 4mm (US G/6) crochet hook for finishing details
  • Darning or tapestry needle for seaming the stocking pieces together
  • 3cm red pompom for the reindeer nose
  • Sew-on wobbly eyes, sewing needle, and thread for facial features

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The combination of flat knitting, short row shaping, and i-cord construction provides an engaging project that builds confidence while remaining manageable. The embellishment elements—pompom nose and wobbly eyes—add playful character without requiring advanced skills.
