Product Description

Inspiration

When you see something that reminds you of sweets, you can’t help but say yum! This yummy jumper works the pompom trend by adding a touch of glamour, with it's necklace back.

Original Design and Pattern

My design stands out from the pompom crowd, as I have developed my own pattern/3D technique using pompom yarn, which is much quicker than doing the pompom stitch itself! Heads will turn on a night out and in the words of Justin Timberlake – “I’m bringing sexy back…!” An unforgettable jumper that you can be proud of once knitted with my unique design. I have also added my own diagrams too.

Pompom le Bonbon! Jumper by Bored Knitless!

What is Being Made

The Pompom le Bonbon! is a glamorous backless knitted jumper designed to showcase the popular pompom trend with an elegant twist. This piece combines playful texture with sophisticated styling, featuring a dramatic open back design perfect for evening wear. The jumper uses contrasting yarn weights and textures to create visual interest and dimension throughout the garment.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is an advanced knitting project created as a downloadable PDF pattern. The design uses contiguous knitting, meaning the pattern is worked in a continuous manner rather than in separate sections, which requires careful attention to construction and shaping. This technique-forward approach makes it suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters who are comfortable with complex pattern work and garment assembly.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches including:

  • Knit stitch (k1) – the basic foundation stitch
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping

These core stitches are combined within the contiguous pattern structure to create shaping, texture variation, and the distinctive silhouette of the backless design. A crochet border is worked around the neckline using single crochet or similar techniques to finish the neck edge professionally.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Pompom le Bonbon! requires 5 skeins in total worked across multiple yarn weights for textural contrast:

  • 1 skein of Creative Pompon in super chunky weight (200gm/100m) – provides the signature pompom texture and visual statement
  • 4 skeins of Knitting Essentials Sparkle in DK weight (50gm each), OR alternatively 2 skeins of James C. Brett Twinkle DK (100gm each) – the sparkle yarns add glamour and shimmer to complement the chunky pompom element

The combination of super chunky and DK weight yarns creates interesting textural contrast, with the DK weight providing drape and the super chunky adding bold visual impact.

Tools and Equipment

Successful completion of this jumper requires:

  • 4mm circular needles in 150cm length – the long circular needle accommodates the contiguous knitting method and allows for working large stitch counts without crowding
  • 2.75mm crochet hook – for finishing the neckline border
  • 6 stitch markers – essential for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the contiguous construction
  • 16 straight pins – used for blocking and garment assembly
  • Needle and thread – for seaming or securing elements during finishing

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern works to a gauge of 18 stitches equals 10 centimeters (4 inches) approximately when measured over the main knitting. Achieving correct gauge is critical for this advanced project, as the contiguous construction and backless shaping depend on precise stitch counts and measurements.
