Product Description

You can face any winter storm with this fully reversible cowl in your wardrobe! Worked flat and then grafted together, this project is also a great way to master the Kitchener Stitch technique. Use a solid or mostly-solid yarn for the perfect balance of softness, warmth and texture. This unisex cowl comes in two lengths, depending on your preference for wearing the cowl; try wrapping the longer size around your shoulders as a mini cape, or protect your head by wearing the smaller size as a snood. The sky is the limit! The sample shown is the larger size.

What is Being Made

The Nor'Easter Cowl is a fully reversible, unisex cowl designed to provide warmth and style through winter weather. This knitted accessory comes in two finished sizes: a Small version with a circumference of 23 inches (58.5 cm) and a Large version with a circumference of 43½ inches (110.5 cm). Both sizes share a consistent height of 10 inches (25.5 cm). The cowl's reversible construction makes it a versatile piece that can be worn in multiple ways, including wrapped around the shoulders as a mini shawl for added coverage and warmth.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques that make it an excellent learning opportunity for knitters looking to expand their skillset. The cowl is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which simplifies the construction process. Once the flat piece reaches the desired dimensions, the two ends are grafted together using the Kitchener Stitch technique, a method that creates an invisible seam and produces a seamlessly joined fabric. This grafting approach is particularly valuable for knitters seeking to master this essential finishing technique, as it demonstrates how flat-worked pieces can be elegantly joined without visible seams.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern features a Slant stitch pattern that creates visual interest and texture throughout the cowl. The gauge for this project is 18 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in the Slant stitch pattern, which helps establish the proper sizing and drape of the finished garment.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Nor'Easter Cowl is designed to be worked in worsted-weight yarn. The yardage requirements vary by size: the Small version requires approximately 220 yards (205 meters) of yarn, while the Large version requires 440 yards (405 meters). The pattern is shown worked in Knit Picks Swish Worsted, a 100% merino wool yarn that provides 110 yards (101 meters) per 50 grams (1.76 ounces). For the Small size, you will need 2 balls of yarn; for the Large size, 4 balls are required. The pattern specifically recommends using a solid or mostly-solid yarn like the Swish Worsted for the ideal balance of softness, warmth, and sophisticated texture.

Tools and Notions Required

  • US 8 (5.0 mm) knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Waste yarn for the Kitchener Stitch grafting process
  • Crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assisting with grafting

The combination of these materials and techniques creates a sophisticated, practical accessory that works equally well as a close-fitting cowl or as a larger wrap-style piece depending on which size you choose to knit.
