Mr Fitzwilliam Fox Knitted Toy by Kay Jones
What is Being Made
Mr Fitzwilliam Fox is a knitted stuffed toy character from the Bakery Bears family, designed by Kay Jones. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a charming fox figure with removable clothing. The fox character is a gamekeeper on a country estate in Bearbyshire who enjoys autumn walks, collecting leaves and acorns, and storing treasures in his coat pockets. The finished toy makes an engaging handmade gift or collectible addition to the Bakery Bears toy collection.
Construction Techniques
The toy is constructed using fundamental knitting methods suited to amigurumi-style toy making. The main body of Mr Fitzwilliam Fox is knit in the round using the magic loop technique, which allows seamless circular knitting on smaller circumferences without requiring multiple needles. After the body pieces are completed through in-the-round knitting, they are seamed together to form the three-dimensional fox figure. This combination of in-the-round construction and strategic seaming creates a sturdy, well-finished toy suitable for play or display.
Stitches and Yarn Details
The fox body is worked in worsted weight yarn, requiring approximately 130 meters (142 yards) of main color yarn with 15 meters (17 yards) of contrast color for details. The pattern utilizes 3.25mm, 3mm, and 2.25mm circular needles for working the body pieces in the round. The removable coat is constructed separately using 4ply/fingering weight yarn—a finer yarn weight than the body—with approximately 60 meters (65 yards) required. The coat is worked on 3.5mm needles, which may be used straight or circular depending on knitter preference. The socks, also made from 4ply/fingering weight yarn, are designed to be quick to knit and removable, allowing for versatile toy styling.

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle toy construction and in-the-round techniques. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access to the full instructions.
