Product Description

The Mountain Berry hat/cowl can change as quickly as the seasons and is the perfect accessory to keep you warm when traveling. Wear it loosely around your neck while indoors and pull it up over your ears when stepping outside. The i-cord runs through the top edge and is decorative when worn as a cowl and functional when pulled tight transitioning to a hat.

Long hair ponytails or buns are no problem. This versatile cowl is all you will need to pack for that trip to the mountains or train ride to European Christmas markets.

Pattern Notes

This cowl is knit bottom up starting with k1, p1 ribbing. A quilted stitch pattern and color changes transition colors throughout. At the top a simple eyelet lace row is threaded with a removable i-cord to cinch up the top when used as a hat.

Mountain Berry Hat and Cowl by Yellow Ribbon Knits

Project Overview

The Mountain Berry is a versatile two-in-one knit accessory designed by Yellow Ribbon Knits that functions as both a cowl and a hat. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters a practical solution for layered dressing and travel, allowing the piece to transition seamlessly between a loose neck cowl worn indoors and a fitted hat pulled up over the ears for outdoor warmth. The design accommodates various hairstyles, including long hair worn in ponytails or buns, making it a functional choice for active wear.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single accessory piece that serves dual purposes. When worn loosely around the neck, it functions as a cowl for layering. When the removable i-cord is pulled tight through the top edge, the piece cinches closed and transforms into a hat. The design is specifically engineered for travel, making it an ideal packable accessory for mountain trips, train journeys, or visits to European Christmas markets.

Construction and Techniques

The Mountain Berry is knit from the bottom up, beginning with a foundational k1, p1 ribbing that creates stretch and structure. Throughout the body of the piece, color changes are incorporated to create visual interest and transition between different hues. A quilted stitch pattern is worked into the main fabric, adding texture and dimension to the finished cowl.

The top edge features a simple eyelet lace row that serves a functional purpose. This lace row is designed to accommodate a removable i-cord, which threads through the eyelets. The i-cord is decorative when the cowl is worn loosely around the neck, but becomes functional when pulled tight to cinch the top opening closed, transforming the piece into a fitted hat.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch
  • Purl stitch
  • Ribbing (k1, p1 pattern)
  • Quilted stitch pattern
  • Eyelet lace stitches
  • I-cord (for drawstring)

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for aran weight yarn, which provides sufficient warmth and drape for a versatile cowl-to-hat accessory. The aran weight is substantial enough to create a cozy layer while remaining packable for travel. Knitters will need appropriate needles for aran weight yarn and a crochet hook or i-cord needles to create the removable drawstring i-cord.

Difficulty Level

The Mountain Berry is rated as a beginner level pattern, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. While the pattern incorporates several techniques including ribbing, color changes, and lace stitches, each element is straightforward and manageable for those building foundational knitting skills. The removable i-cord adds a practical touch without requiring advanced construction methods.
