Product Description
I designed these lightweight cozy socks to be a quick knit for the mother figure in your life. The name is nod to the many ways that we say 'mother' in English, French, and Arabic.
These socks are knit from the toe up making them easy to adjust for length. The lace pattern and ribbing means it will fit from regular to wide widths. And the princess sole with it's knit side on the inside of the sock means that it'll be smooth and comfy for the wearer. These are loose fitting and easy to slide off and on. The pattern gives instructions for an anklet or calf length as well a choice of a feminine lace cuff or for a more standard ribbed cuff.
The finished circumference is 7.5 inches unstretched. The anklet length is 3 inches long. The calf length is 6 inches long.
You should be able to knit either length and either cuff with a single ball of Cascade Anchor Bay.
Mother, Mère, Umm Knitted Socks by Fatimah Hinds
What is Being Made
Mother, Mère, Umm is an advanced knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer Fatimah Hinds. These are fully customizable socks that feature mirrored cable panels and offer multiple construction options to suit individual preferences and foot dimensions. The pattern provides flexibility in leg length and cuff style, making it adaptable for various wearers.
Construction Method
The socks are knit from the toe up, a construction technique that allows for precise fit and minimal waste. The designer recommends dividing the yarn ball into two equal portions before beginning, ensuring balanced yardage for both socks. The pattern accommodates multiple needle options, providing instructions for knitting on three double-pointed needles (DPNs) or alternatively on one long circular needle, giving knitters flexibility based on their preferred technique and comfort level.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern incorporates several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques:
- Stockinette Stitch forms the primary fabric structure, creating a smooth, classic knit appearance
- Cable Panels are featured throughout the design with mirrored placement on left and right socks, requiring cable needle work for twisted stitch manipulation
- Heel Construction uses a princess foot design where the smooth knit side of both sole and heel are positioned on the interior of the sock for comfort
- Flat Instep shaping provides a comfortable fit across the top of the foot
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches by 22 rounds over 3 inches by 3 inches in stockinette stitch. This gauge measurement is intentionally chosen for wearer comfort rather than a tighter tension. The resulting fabric has significant stretch, making the socks suitable for a wide range of foot and leg widths without requiring multiple size options.
Customization Options
Mother, Mère, Umm offers knitters two distinct customization choices. The pattern includes instructions for two different leg lengths, allowing adjustment for personal preference or intended wearer. Additionally, two cuff options are provided, and these choices are fully interchangeable, meaning knitters can combine any leg length with any cuff style to create their ideal sock.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn totaling approximately 262 yards. The sample shown uses Cascade Anchor Bay, a blend of 50% superwash merino and 50% cotton in the Coral colorway. This fiber blend provides durability, easy care through machine washing, and a comfortable cotton component for breathability.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need US 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or one long circular needle of the same size. Additional notions include a cable needle for working the cable panels, a darning needle for weaving in ends and grafting, and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections.
Pattern Notes
Some instructions within the pattern are listed separately for the left and right socks to accommodate the mirrored cable panel design. This attention to symmetry creates a polished, professional appearance. The pattern was designed and copyrighted by Fatimah Hinds in 2019.
