What Is Being Made
The Mom Mosaic Bookmark is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a decorative bookmark featuring the word "Mom" worked into the design using mosaic crochet techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern from Netty's Knots offers a practical accessory that combines functionality with personalized lettering, making it suitable for gift-giving or personal use.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses mosaic crochet, a specialized technique that creates intricate color patterns and textured designs. Mosaic crochet involves working into specific loop positions—the back loop only for single crochet stitches (except at start and end rows) and the front loop of the row below for double crochet stitches. This selective loop placement creates the distinctive mosaic effect and allows the lettering to emerge naturally within the design. The pattern is worked from right to left, with yarn fastened off at the end to leave tails for weaving in.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (Sc) – worked into the back loop only during mosaic sections, except for start and end stitches
- Double Crochet (Dc) – worked into the front loop of the row below during mosaic sections
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) – used for joining and finishing
- Chain (Ch) – used for foundation and construction
Materials and Tools
This project requires DK weight yarn in a minimum of two colors: a main color for the bookmark base and a contrasting color for the "Mom" lettering. A third color is optional for the border. Approximately 10 grams of main color yarn, 10 grams of contrasting color, and 5 grams of a third color are needed, with additional yarn reserved for optional embellishments like tassels or pom poms. Crafters can use leftover yarn scraps from their stash. Essential tools include a 4mm crochet hook, scissors, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 30 rows equals a 10 centimeter square. Maintaining this gauge ensures the bookmark reaches the intended finished dimensions and that the mosaic lettering displays properly.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Mom Mosaic Bookmark is accessible to crocheters new to mosaic techniques. The pattern provides clear abbreviations and notes to guide crafters through the specialized loop placement required for mosaic crochet, making it an excellent introduction to this decorative method.
