What is Being Made

The Misty collection consists of two coordinating knitted accessories: a turban headband and a pair of wrist warmers. Both pieces are designed as one-size-fits-all projects that work together as a matching set or can be made individually. The turban features a finished depth of 14cm, while the wrist warmers measure 17cm in length, making them ideal for layering under sleeves or wearing as standalone warmth accessories.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The construction method involves simple cast-on and cast-off procedures, with the designer providing guidance on adjusting finished measurements by adding or subtracting cast-on stitches. The pattern includes a note about light steaming after completion to help set the tension and achieve the specified finished measurements. Both the turban and wrist warmers are worked in the round or flat using straightforward row-by-row construction.

Stitches Used

The Misty pattern relies exclusively on Garter Stitch, a fundamental knitting stitch that creates a textured, reversible fabric. Garter Stitch is worked using a simple 2-row repeat: knit on the right side (Row 1) and knit on the wrong side (Row 2). This repetitive pattern is ideal for beginners as it requires only basic knitting knowledge and produces a fabric with excellent drape and elasticity, perfect for fitted accessories like wrist warmers and turbans.

Materials and Tools

• Yarn: Purl Alpaca Medium, 100% English Alpaca, 77 meters per 50-gram ball. The pattern requires 2 balls total (1 ball for wrist warmers only, or 1 ball for turban only, or split between both projects). The photographed version uses the shade 'Alpaca Storm'
• Yarn Weight: Aran weight yarn, providing excellent warmth and drape for these close-fitting accessories
• Needles: One pair of 5mm knitting needles, or the size required to match the specified tension
• Tension: 17 stitches and 28 rows over a 10cm square measured in Garter Stitch after light steaming

Pattern Details

Designed by Kari-Helene Rane and available as a downloadable PDF, this pattern (version 1.1, November 2013) offers flexibility for customization. The wrist warmers are created by casting on 30 stitches and working in Garter Stitch for approximately 44 rows until the piece fits snugly around the wrist. The turban follows a similar construction method with adjustable depth. Both pieces finish with a cast-off using a long tail, which can be used for seaming if needed. The beginner difficulty level makes this an excellent introduction to knitting accessories with immediate, wearable results.
