LoveCrafts Spring Garden Bottle Gift Bag – Quilted Fabric Gift Bag Pattern by Lou Orth

The LoveCrafts Spring Garden Bottle Gift Bag is a charming and practical quilted fabric gift bag designed by Lou Orth and available as a free downloadable PDF from LoveCrafts. Purpose-built to hold a standard wine or gift bottle, this reusable fabric bag makes a beautiful alternative to disposable wrapping, and is a wonderful way to showcase the Spring Garden collection by LoveCrafts. The finished bag measures 12" in height, 7¾" in width, and 4" in diameter, making it perfectly proportioned for a standard bottle.

Rated at an advanced beginner to intermediate difficulty level, this project is ideal for sewists who are comfortable with basic straight-line sewing and are ready to develop their skills with interfacing, lining construction, and neat finishing techniques. The pattern is concise yet detailed, and Lou Orth's step-by-step instructions guide the maker through the full construction process from cutting to finishing.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a structured fabric bottle gift bag with a fully lined interior, interfaced outer panels for body and stability, and a ribbon or cord tie closure at the top. The bag is designed to be reusable and giftable in its own right, with the beautiful Spring Garden fabric collection doing much of the decorative work. The bag features a clever side gap detail that allows the ribbon or cord to be threaded through the sides, creating a neat drawstring-style closure that holds the bag shut around the neck of a bottle.

Techniques Used

  • Fusing interfacing to outer fabric panels using manufacturer's instructions for a structured finish
  • Right sides together (RST) sewing for both the outer bag and lining construction
  • Deliberate gap sewing – leaving a precise ¾" gap between two marked points on each side seam to create ribbon channels
  • Backstitching at the start, end, and around each side gap to reinforce stress points
  • Turning gap construction – leaving a 3"–4" gap in the lining bottom seam to allow the bag to be turned right side out
  • Accurate marking and measuring – marking points at 3¾" and 4½" from the top on both sides of each outer panel to position the ribbon channel gaps precisely
  • General pressing and preparation of fabric prior to cutting, a key quilting and patchwork discipline that ensures accuracy throughout construction

Stitches and Sewing Methods

  • Straight stitch – used throughout for all seams, with a standard ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise noted
  • Backstitch – used at the beginning and end of each seam and critically around the ribbon channel gaps to prevent unravelling at these stress points

Materials Required

  • Outer fabric: 1 fat quarter (FQ) – fabrics shown are from the Spring Garden collection by LoveCrafts; cut two pieces at 8½" x 16½"
  • Lining fabric: 1 fat quarter (FQ); cut two pieces at 8½" x 16½"
  • Vlieseline G700 interfacing: ¼ metre; cut two pieces at 8" x 16" – this fusible interfacing adds structure and body to the outer panels
  • Thin ribbon or cord: 1¼ metres total, cut into two equal lengths for threading through the side channel gaps to form the drawstring closure

Pattern Notes and Tips

The pattern assumes a usable fabric width of 40", and all cutting measurements are given as width x height. Lou Orth recommends pressing all fabrics thoroughly before cutting to ensure accurate measurements, a standard best practice in quilting and fabric crafts. The instructions are written for one gift bag, so yardage and cutting quantities can be multiplied if making multiple bags as gifts. Reading through the full instructions before beginning is strongly advised, as the ribbon channel gap placement requires careful marking on both the right and wrong sides of the outer fabric
