Product Description

This little Christmas Tree requires only a few grammes of yarn and can be made in about an hour; a quick and simple knit for festive decorations. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the tree is knitted in acrylic DK yarns in stockinette on single pointed needles (not in the round). It is made from two pieces (the green top and red base), seamed and stuffed, and the bead decorations are sewn on after making up. Instead of using beads you could decorate with embroidery or buttons. To convert the tree to a hanging decoration, thread some yarn or ribbon through the top to make a hanging loop. For beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, kfb increase and k2tog decrease, and seaming to finish.

Little Christmas Tree Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry

What Is Being Made

The Little Christmas Tree is a small decorative knitted ornament designed as a festive holiday decoration. This charming project creates a three-dimensional tree suitable for display or hanging, making it an ideal handmade gift or seasonal embellishment for homes and Christmas displays.

Construction and Assembly

This knitting pattern involves creating the tree in two separate pieces that are later joined together. The design consists of a green knitted top section forming the tree shape and a red knitted base providing stability and visual contrast. After completing both pieces, they are seamed together using a tapestry needle and then stuffed to create a dimensional, sculptural form. The finished tree can be customized as a hanging decoration by threading yarn or ribbon through the top to create a loop for suspension.

Knitting Techniques

The Little Christmas Tree is worked using the stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance. The pattern is knitted flat, meaning you work back and forth on straight needles rather than working in the round. This flat construction method is beginner-friendly and straightforward to execute. The pattern uses the long tail cast on method to begin the project, a reliable and commonly used casting on technique.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch: The primary stitch throughout the pattern, creating a smooth, even fabric surface
  • Seaming: Used to join the two pieces together after knitting is complete

Materials and Yarn

This project requires DK weight yarn, also known as double knitting or light worsted weight yarn. The pattern calls for minimal yardage, using only a few grammes of yarn in two colors: green for the tree portion and red for the base. The designer used Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn, which provides durability and easy care for this decorative piece. Acrylic yarn is an excellent choice for beginners and creates a sturdy, long-lasting ornament.

Needles and Notions

  • Knitting needles: A pair of 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed straight needles with a minimum length of 20cm
  • Darning or tapestry needle: Essential for seaming the two pieces together and weaving in yarn ends
  • Decorative embellishments: Beads for adorning the finished tree, or alternatively, embroidery thread or buttons for personalized decoration options
  • Optional hanging materials: Yarn or ribbon for creating a hanging loop if desired

Skill Level

This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, manageable project. The straightforward stockinette stitch and simple two-piece construction require only basic knitting knowledge and fundamental techniques.
