Product Description
Laurel is a gorgeous shawl, I just love how the burst of lace around the edge of the shawl is complemented by the beauty and simplicity of the body.
The original shawl was knitted in Rowan Fine Lace for the body and the lovely lacy edging in Rowan Fine Art on 3.25 mm knitting needles.
I have re-worked this gorgeous shawl in the glorious Rowan Kidsilk Haze and 5mm needles and the results are magnificent! The shawl is fabulously oversized and absolutely stunning.
Finished size Two tone version - after blocking; the shawl measures approximately 134cm at the widest points and 60cm at the deepest point.
One colour version - completed shawl measures approximately 187cm at the widest points and 80cm at the deepest point.
Laurel Shawl by Anna Nikipirowicz
What is Being Made
The Laurel Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl designed by independent designer Anna Nikipirowicz. This pattern offers two distinct construction options: a two-tone colorway version and a single-color version, allowing knitters to choose based on their yarn preferences and desired finished dimensions. The shawl is a versatile accessory suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.
Finished Dimensions
The two-tone version measures approximately 134 centimeters (52 inches) at its widest points and 60 centimeters (23.5 inches) at its deepest point after blocking. The one-color version is larger, measuring approximately 187 centimeters (73.5 inches) at the widest points and 80 centimeters (31.5 inches) at the deepest point when completed.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs lace-weight yarn construction. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques combined with lace stitch work to create an elegant, openwork design. Blocking is an essential finishing step for both versions, as it shapes the shawl to its final dimensions and enhances the drape and definition of the lace pattern.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern incorporates stocking stitch as a primary stitch element, measured at a tension of 28 stitches by 35 rows over a 10-centimeter (4-inch) square. The lace-weight construction suggests the inclusion of decorative openwork stitches typical of shawl patterns, creating visual interest and the characteristic drape associated with lace shawls.
Materials and Yarn Options
Two-Tone Version
- Yarn A: 1 skein of Rowan Fine Lace in Ochre 930
- Yarn B: 1 skein of Rowan Fine Art in Pheasant 307
- Needles: 3.25mm (US 3/UK 10) knitting needles
One-Colour Version
- Yarn: 4 skeins of Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Candy Girl 606
- Needles: 5mm (US 8/UK 6) knitting needles
The two-tone version employs Rowan Fine Lace and Rowan Fine Art yarns, which are premium lace-weight options that create delicate, refined fabric. The one-color version uses Rowan Kidsilk Haze, a luxurious blend yarn known for its softness and subtle sheen, requiring four skeins for completion. The needle size difference between versions (3.25mm versus 5mm) reflects the different yarn weights and desired finished dimensions.
