Kaleidoscope Tile Cross Stitch Pattern by DMC – PAT0105

The Kaleidoscope Tile is a stunning geometric cross stitch design from DMC, available as a free downloadable PDF (PAT0105). Inspired by the mesmerising symmetry of a kaleidoscope, this pattern features an intricate repeating tile motif built entirely from precise geometric shapes and angles. The finished piece measures approximately 33 × 33 cm, making it an ideal candidate for framing as wall art, displaying in an embroidery hoop, or incorporating into a decorative textile project.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single, square geometric embroidery panel with a kaleidoscope-inspired tile design. The symmetrical, repeating structure gives the finished work a bold, graphic quality reminiscent of decorative tilework and Islamic geometric art. The design is presented in both English and French throughout the PDF, reflecting DMC's international heritage.

Technique Used

Cross stitch is the sole technique used in this pattern. Cross stitch is one of the oldest and most widely practised forms of counted embroidery. Each stitch is formed by two diagonal stitches crossing at the centre to create a small × shape. When worked on an even-weave or Aida fabric, the stitches align perfectly with the fabric grid, allowing complex geometric and pictorial designs to be built up stitch by stitch from a charted diagram. The symmetrical nature of cross stitch makes it particularly well suited to geometric tile designs like this one, where clean lines and precise angles are essential to the overall effect.

Stitches Used

  • Cross Stitch (Point de Croix) – the only stitch required for this pattern, worked throughout the entire design using 2 strands of thread

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated intermediate. While no advanced stitches are required beyond the standard cross stitch, the complexity of the geometric layout, the number of colour changes, and the precision needed to maintain the kaleidoscope's symmetry make it more suitable for stitchers who already have some counted cross stitch experience. Beginners who are comfortable reading a chart and managing multiple thread colours will also find it achievable with patience.

Materials and Thread Colours

The pattern calls for DMC Mouliné Spécial ART 117 stranded cotton embroidery floss, worked on 14-count or 16-count Aida fabric (described in the original as 5.5 or 6 points per centimetre). A No. 12 needle is recommended. The six colours specified in the pattern are:

  • DMC 939 – a deep navy blue (× 4 skeins)
  • DMC 3865 – a warm winter white (× 7 skeins)
  • DMC 310 – classic black (× 3 skeins)
  • DMC 950 – a soft desert sand or blush (× 3 skeins)
  • DMC 163 – a medium celadon green (× 2 skeins)
  • DMC 598 – a light turquoise (× 1 skein)

All colours are worked using 2 strands of the DMC Mouliné Spécial floss. The skein quantities listed are calculated specifically for a finished size of approximately 33 × 33 cm on 14- or 16-count Aida. The palette combines deep, rich tones with lighter neutrals and cool accent colours, creating the layered, jewel-like contrast that gives the kaleidoscope tile its visual depth.
