The neckline is very flattering and the way it nips in at the waist give a proper hourglass silhouette. If you’re not feeling the “knitted dress on bare skin” thing, wear it layered with shirts or a fitted jumper underneath or with a cardigan over the top. Bring out your ‘inner Marilyn’ by making this wonderful Dress.

Icon Dress by Kari-Helene Rane

What is Being Made

The Icon Dress is a knitted garment designed by independent designer Kari-Helene Rane. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in five sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL, with bust measurements ranging from 73 cm (29 inches) to 112 cm (44 inches). The sample shown in the pattern photography is knitted in size Small.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs cable knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The pattern incorporates cable stitches worked with a cable needle, demonstrating moderate complexity suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire. The dress features a picot edge hem construction, which involves folding the fabric at a decorative picot point and grafting the cast-on stitches to the live stitches to create a finished, folded hem edge.

Stitches Used

The Icon Dress pattern utilizes the following key stitches and stitch patterns:

  • Stocking stitch (knit and purl in alternating rows) as the primary fabric base
  • 3/3 LC (Left Cable) - created by slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle and holding them at the front of the work, knitting the next 3 stitches, then knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle
  • 3/3 RC (Right Cable) - created by slipping 3 stitches to a cable needle and holding them at the back of the work, knitting the next 3 stitches, then knitting the 3 stitches from the cable needle
  • Picot edge construction for decorative hem finishing

Materials and Specifications

The Icon Dress pattern specifies the following materials and yarn requirements:

  • Yarn: Purl Alpaca Fine, 100% English Alpaca, 116 meters per 50 grams
  • Yardage by Size: 12 balls (XS), 13 balls (S), 14 balls (M), 15 balls (L), and 17 balls (XL) of 50g balls
  • Yarn Weight: DK weight
  • Sample Color: Photographed in the shade 'Alpaca Rain'
  • Needles: One pair of 4 mm circular knitting needles (or size required to match gauge)

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 29 rows to a 10 cm square when measured over stocking stitch using 4 mm needles after light steaming. Knitters are instructed to adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct tension, as achieving proper gauge is essential for the finished garment to fit as designed.
