What Is Being Made

This is a charming knitted tea cosy designed to fit teapots ranging from 2 cup to 8 cup sizes. Inspired by Beverly McLoughland's poem "I Talk With The Moon," the cosy features an adorable owl design that keeps your teapot warm while adding a whimsical decorative touch to your tea service. The pattern offers multiple sizing options to accommodate different teapot circumferences and heights, making it a versatile project for tea enthusiasts.

Sizes and Fit

The pattern is available in four sizes:

  • Small (2 Cup): fits up to 12" (30 cm) circumference and 6.5" (16 cm) height
  • Medium (4 Cup): fits up to 15" (38 cm) circumference and 7.5" (19 cm) height
  • Large (6 Cup): fits up to 18" (46 cm) circumference and 7.5" (19 cm) height
  • Extra Large (8 Cup): fits up to 20" (54 cm) circumference and 8.5" (22 cm) height

The sample shown in the pattern is worked in the Large size on a 1L/6 Cup teapot.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level tea cosy employs steek knitting, a technique that allows knitters to create seamless colorwork designs. Steeking involves knitting in the round with two contrasting yarn colors, then cutting the fabric to create openings—a method that requires careful yarn selection and technique. The pattern uses circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the main knitting construction, combined with a crochet hook for finishing details, creating a hybrid approach that adds visual interest and structural integrity to the finished piece.

Stitches and Colorwork

The design incorporates two-color knitting with contrasting shades to create the owl motif. The colorwork is worked in the round, allowing the owl design to emerge through the interplay of the main color and contrasting color yarns. The pattern includes crochet finishing work, adding texture and detail to complete the owl's features and overall aesthetic appeal.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires DK weight yarn (also known as 8 Ply), totaling approximately 200 yards (78 meters) across two contrasting color shades. The pattern specifically recommends using pure wool or a fiber suitable for steek knitting, as this ensures the fabric will hold securely when cut during the steek process. The sample was knitted using Rowan Purelife British Sheep Breeds DK, a 100% wool yarn with 131 yards per 50g skein, in the colorways Brown B.F.L. (Main Color) and Cream B.F.L. (Contrasting Color).

Needles and Hooks

The pattern calls for 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needles or DPNs for the main knitting construction, and a 3 mm / US 2.5 crochet hook for finishing details. These needle and hook sizes work together to create the appropriate gauge and fabric density needed for a functional, insulating tea cosy.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 stitches per inch (or the equivalent metric measurement), which is typical for DK weight yarn and ensures the cosy will fit the intended teapot sizes accurately.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters with some experience. The two-color steek knitting technique and the precision required for proper fit make it more challenging than a basic project, but the detailed pattern guidance supports knitters through the construction process.

A good first order experience ☺

A few of the instructions don't make it clear which wool you should be using. My first time at circular knitting and unfortunately the teacosy came out smaller than I expected. Yes confess didn't knit the gauge square! 😶 But enjoyed the challenge and will have another go! Also my first attempt at steels!
