Product Description

Hanorah is designed to be worn as a coat, while being cozy and comfortable enough to be worn inside. With moss stitch edging and waist band, this coat is perfect to use those special buttons, or try an eclectic mix!

The body is knit in one piece, using raglan shaping, and is seamless. The edging is knit at the same time, making finishing simple. A small peplum is knit into the back.

Pattern has been test knit and professionally tech edited.

Hanorah is written for Aran or Bulky weight yarns. Please check your gauge, and choose the size based on the chest measurement of your recipient. I do not recommend going up a size as 4"/10cm of ease is worked into the pattern for each size.

Hanorah Cardigan Coat by Sarah Ronchetti

What is Being Made

Hanorah is a children's cardigan coat designed by Sarah Ronchetti, inspired by her great-great-great grandmother who emigrated from Ireland to New Zealand in 1864. This garment functions as a versatile layering piece suitable for autumn and winter wear, offering both warmth for outdoor conditions and comfort for indoor wear. The design combines the structure of a traditional coat with the wearability of a cardigan, making it practical for transitional seasons and variable weather.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Hanorah is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern incorporates approximately 4 inches (10 centimeters) of positive ease, providing comfortable room for movement and layering. The designer emphasizes careful size selection based on the child's actual chest measurement rather than age, with a recommendation to size down if measurements fall between sizes rather than up, to achieve the intended fit. For those preferring a closer-fitting cardigan silhouette, the pattern allows knitters to select a smaller size while maintaining the correct body and sleeve length for the child's age.

The garment is worked using stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and scrap yarn or spare circular needles are used for holding stitches during construction. A darning needle is essential for finishing and seaming.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the intermediate difficulty level suggests the use of standard knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques typical of fitted garments. The construction method allows for customization of fit through strategic sizing choices.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Hanorah is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and creates fabric with excellent drape and warmth suitable for outerwear. The pattern calls for buttons measuring 3/4 inch to 1 inch (1.8 to 2.5 centimeters) wide, with quantities varying by size: 8 buttons for the smallest sizes and 10 to 12 buttons for larger sizes. Standard knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn are required, along with circular needles for seamless construction or flat needles depending on the knitter's preferred method.

Pattern Details and Sizing

The Hanorah pattern is available in multiple children's sizes, with the sizing structure accommodating various age ranges. The pattern provides specific guidance on button placement and quantities for each size option, ensuring proper closure and proportional spacing across the finished garment.
