Product Description

Wrap your neck is cushiony warmth! The dimpled fabric of the cowl, combined with the insulating properties of the camel and yak fibers used in the samples, ensure you will stay toasty warm during even the coldest of days.

Although the look of this stitch pattern is quite different on each side, both the "right side" and the "wrong side" are very attractive. In the photo of the blue cowl worn with the matching hat, the reverse side of the fabric is shown.

P.S. Fossetta means "dimple" in Italian.

Fossetta Cowl by Janelle Martin

What is Being Made

The Fossetta Cowl is a neck warmer designed to provide cushiony warmth through its distinctive dimpled fabric construction. This cowl measures 54 inches (137.16 cm) in circumference and 8 inches (20.32 cm) in width when blocked, making it a generous neck accessory suitable for wrapping around the neck multiple times or wearing as a single-layer cowl. The design is reversible, with both the right side and wrong side of the fabric presenting attractive visual interest, allowing knitters flexibility in how they choose to wear the finished piece.

Techniques and Stitches Used

The Fossetta Cowl features a charted stitch pattern that creates the signature dimpled texture. The pattern is worked using Chart A, which establishes the gauge and stitch repeat for the entire project. The reversible nature of the design means that the stitch pattern reads beautifully from both directions, making this cowl versatile for styling. The dimpled fabric construction is achieved through the strategic placement of stitches as indicated in the chart, creating visual texture and depth that enhances the insulating properties of the yarn.

Yarn and Materials

The Fossetta Cowl is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn, specifically calling for 400 yards (366 meters) of worsted weight yarn that knits up to 4 to 5 stitches per inch. The pattern recommends yarn blends that provide warmth and drape, such as wool and silk combinations. The sample shown was knitted using The Verdant Gryphon 'Mondegreen' yarn, which is composed of 60% Blue-Faced Leicester, 20% silk, and 20% baby camel fiber, providing both softness and insulating warmth ideal for cold-weather wear.

Needles and Gauge

This project requires one US #9/5.5 mm circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 cm), or the size needed to obtain the correct gauge. The required gauge is 16 stitches and 24 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) when working Chart A and measuring the blocked fabric. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished circumference and width measurements.

Skill Level

The Fossetta Cowl is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic knitting techniques and are ready to work from a stitch chart. The project is manageable for those with some experience reading pattern instructions and working with circular needles.
