Product Description

Flower Power Granny Square has been designed especially for a Granny Square Day 2020 Celebration!

The middle of the square has a 3D flower motif where the petals pop out of the square!

The finished square measures 12 x 12 cm.

The flower motif that appears after completing round 3 measures 7.5 cm across the widest part (from petal to petal).

I used Deramores Studio DK in Citrine, Light Pink, Lime and Peridot for the multicoloured square and Stylecraft Special DK in Apricot for the single colour square.

The finished square uses @ 30-35m of yarn.

What is Being Made

The Flower Power Granny Square is a beginner-friendly crochet project that creates a decorative 12 x 12 cm square featuring a vibrant flower motif at its center. This downloadable PDF pattern from Blue Star Crochet is ideal for crafters new to crochet who want to learn classic granny square construction while incorporating colorful floral design elements. The finished square can be used as a standalone decorative piece, combined with other squares to create blankets, or incorporated into larger crochet projects.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The design starts with a magic circle, a foundational technique that creates a tight center point for circular motifs. The pattern is worked in continuous rounds, with each round closed using a slip stitch before moving to the next. All work is completed on the right side of the fabric. The flower motif develops over multiple rounds, reaching 7.5 cm across at its widest point after completing round 3. The square is then squared off in round 6 using a specific stitch combination to transform the circular flower into a square shape suitable for joining with other squares or displaying as an individual piece.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – the foundational stitch used to create loops and spaces within the pattern
  • Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that forms the main body of the flower petals and structure
  • Single crochet (sc) – a shorter stitch used for shaping and definition
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and close off each completed round
  • V stitch (V st) – a decorative stitch combination of (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) worked in the same space or stitch, creating the characteristic V-shaped elements that form the flower petals and corner details

Materials and Tools

This project uses Deramores Studio DK weight yarn in 100% acrylic fiber. The pattern requires one 100g ball each in four coordinating colors: Citrine (yellow), Light Pink, Lime (green), and Peridot (greenish-yellow), with each ball providing 250 meters of yardage. A 4 mm crochet hook is used to work the yarn. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and 4 stitch markers to help track pattern rounds and maintain consistency throughout the project. The DK weight yarn paired with the 4 mm hook creates a fabric with good stitch definition, making it easier for beginners to see and work their stitches clearly.

Pattern Features and Difficulty Level

Designed as a beginner-level project, the Flower Power Granny Square introduces fundamental crochet skills in a structured, easy-to-follow format. The pattern includes detailed stitch abbreviations using US crochet terms, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters. A video tutorial is available to guide crafters through each round, providing visual instruction that complements the written pattern. The use of stitch markers helps beginners keep track of their progress and maintain even tension throughout the work. The multicolor approach teaches color changes while creating visual interest, and the magic circle technique introduces a modern approach to starting circular motifs.
