Product Description

Add a little flare to your next cross stitch project with this free flamingo pattern! This eye-catching motif is perfectly pretty in pink, and will instantly upgrade any plain tote bag or cushion cover. Genevieve Brading, UK based, is the designer behind the brand Floss and Mischief. It all started because her boyfriend wanted to fill their house with very on-trend stuffed and mounted insects, but she put her foot down as it?s just too creepy. As a peace offering she designed and stitched some cross-stitch beetles for him. Since then, she's been designing many cross stitch projects, either in the taxidermy trend, but also more contemporary patterns. For beginner cross stitchers, check out our guide on how to cross stitch!

Flamingo Cross Stitch Embroidery Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly cross stitch embroidery design featuring a flamingo motif. The finished design measures 7.1 x 12.5 cm (2.8 x 4.9 inches) when stitched on standard 14 count aida fabric. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and includes both a colored cross stitch chart and a black and white cross stitch chart, allowing stitchers to reference either version while working on their project.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern utilizes cross stitch, the fundamental embroidery technique for this design. Cross stitch involves creating X-shaped stitches on evenweave fabric, with each stitch typically occupying one square on the fabric grid. The pattern provides a detailed chart that maps out the placement and color of each cross stitch, making it accessible for beginners learning embroidery fundamentals.

The availability of both colored and black and white chart versions allows stitchers to choose their preferred reference method. Beginners often find colored charts easier to follow, while experienced stitchers may prefer the black and white version with DMC thread color symbols.

Materials Required

  • Thread: DMC Mouliné Special embroidery thread in multiple colors as indicated on the chart
  • Fabric: Aida cross stitch fabric (14 count aida is recommended for beginners)
  • Needle: Cross stitch needle appropriate for your chosen fabric
  • Optional Tools: Embroidery hoop for stabilizing fabric while stitching, scissors for trimming thread

Design Considerations

The design size is dependent on the fabric count selected. Aida fabric is measured by count, referring to the number of cross stitches per inch. A higher count fabric produces smaller, more detailed stitches and a correspondingly smaller finished design. The pattern recommends 14 count aida as the standard choice for beginners, as it provides a comfortable stitch size that is easy to work with while learning embroidery techniques.

This free downloadable pattern from the collaboration between Floss & Mischief and DMC is ideal for beginners starting their cross stitch embroidery journey, offering clear charting and straightforward construction using basic cross stitch techniques.
