Product Description

When the temperature drops to sub-zero, wrap yourself in the warmest of garments: a long hooded cardigan. Dilaila’s Hoodie is named after one of the sheep the wool came from.

This warm thigh-length cardigan is knitted in three colors of a rustic aran-weight wool. The yoke is worked in reverse stockinette in one-row stripes with raglan and V-neck increases made on the wrong (stockinette) side. Waist shaping gives a subtle hourglass curve while gentle A-line increases ensure the cardigan fits comfortably around the hips. The cardigan is finished with a striped hood in reverse stockinette and deep welt pockets. A ribbed button band frames the entire front edge.

The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology, giving only written instructions. The pattern includes a step-by-step photo tutorial for making the welt pockets.

Gauge: 16.5 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm / 4" in stockinette on larger needles, blocked

What is Being Made

Dilaila's Hoodie is a long hooded cardigan designed for warmth in cold weather. This thigh-length garment is named after one of the sheep whose wool was used in its creation. The cardigan combines practical design elements with refined shaping, making it suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a substantial, wearable project.

Knitting Techniques Used

This cardigan employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its structured silhouette and functional design:

  • Yoke construction: The yoke is worked in reverse stockinette stitch with one-row stripes, creating visual interest while building the upper body
  • Raglan increases: Strategic increases shape the armholes and shoulder area for proper garment fit
  • V-neck shaping: Increases are worked on the wrong (stockinette) side to create a clean V-neckline
  • Waist shaping: Decreases and increases create a subtle hourglass curve for a flattering fit
  • A-line increases: Gentle increases at the hip ensure the cardigan drapes comfortably over the lower body
  • Hood construction: A striped hood in reverse stockinette provides warmth and visual continuity
  • Welt pockets: Deep pockets are incorporated for functionality, with step-by-step photo guidance included
  • Ribbed button band: A ribbed edging frames the front opening for a polished finish

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout Dilaila's Hoodie is stockinette stitch, used in both its standard and reverse forms. Reverse stockinette stitch features prominently in the yoke and hood, creating textural contrast through one-row striping. Ribbing is used for the button band edging, providing elasticity and a refined frame for the cardigan's front closure.

Materials and Yarn

Dilaila's Hoodie is knitted in rustic aran-weight wool in three coordinating colors, providing excellent warmth and structure for this substantial garment. Aran-weight yarn allows for relatively quick knitting progress while maintaining the durability needed for a frequently-worn cardigan. The pattern accommodates both metric and US terminology, allowing knitters to work in their preferred measurement system. Notions required for completion are listed separately in the pattern materials section.

Pattern Format and Instructions

This downloadable PDF pattern by independent designer Susanna Winter is written with only written instructions (no charts), making it accessible to knitters who prefer text-based guidance. The inclusion of a step-by-step photo tutorial for constructing the welt pockets provides visual support for this intermediate technique, enhancing the learning experience for knitters tackling this project.
