Product Description

Mosaic stitch patterning on the fronts gives this V-neck jacket a retro flair, underlined by the restrained texture on the back. If you can’t resist the look of little boys in grandpa cardigans, this one’s for you.

This V-neck cardigan is worked bottom up, in pieces, and seamed. It has modified set-in sleeves with a short sleeve cap. The shoulders are joined using a three- needle bind off. The fronts are worked in a simple slip stitch colourwork pattern where only one colour per row is worked. The back has a textured stitch pattern with twisted stitches that may be worked with or without a cable needle. Stitches are picked up along the front edges and neckline to create a Garter Stitch button band with the choice to place the buttons on the right or left side.

Intended to be worn with 3 (3 ¾, 4 ¼, 4 ¾)(4 ¾, 4 ¾, 4 ¾)" / 7.5 (9.5, 11, 12)( 12, 12, 12) cm proportional positive ease. Shown in Size B on 10-month-old and Size A.

Debonair Cardigan by Holli Yeoh

What is Being Made

The Debonair is a V-neck cardigan designed with a retro aesthetic, inspired by the charm of children wearing oversized grandpa-style cardigans. This downloadable knitting pattern offers seven size options ranging from chest measurements of 21 inches (53.5 cm) to 30¾ inches (78 cm), making it suitable for various ages and sizing preferences. The cardigan is intended to be worn with proportional positive ease, ranging from 3 inches to 8 cm depending on the size selected, ensuring a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Techniques and Stitch Work

The Debonair cardigan showcases mosaic stitch patterning on the front panels, which creates a distinctive textured and visually interesting surface. This mosaic stitch technique gives the cardigan its characteristic retro flair and visual appeal. In contrast, the back of the cardigan features restrained texture, allowing the front mosaic pattern to be the focal point of the design. The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knit base. The combination of these techniques—bold patterning on the fronts paired with simplicity on the back—creates an intentional design balance that emphasizes the cardigan's vintage-inspired character.

Materials and Tools Required

This pattern calls for sock yarn in fingering weight (also known as 4-ply yarn), which is a lightweight yarn suitable for creating finely detailed garments with excellent stitch definition. The gauge is 30 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stocking stitch, which helps determine the appropriate yarn weight and needle size for achieving proper fit and fabric drape.

Needles required include:

  • 3 mm (US 2½) straight or circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) or longer, used to obtain the working gauge
  • 2.5 mm (US 1½) circular needles measuring 32 inches (80 cm) or longer, or two sizes smaller than the gauge needles, typically used for ribbed edgings and cuffs

Additional notions and tools include:

  • 5 to 8 buttons measuring 3/8 inch (1 cm) in diameter, depending on the size chosen, with matching thread and a sewing needle for attachment
  • 4 stitch holders or waste yarn for holding stitches during construction
  • Cable needle (optional), useful if the pattern includes cable elements or for managing complex stitch techniques
  • 2 locking stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping increases or decreases
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together

Difficulty Level

The Debonair cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project, indicating that knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and garment construction. The mosaic stitch patterning requires attention to pattern reading and stitch manipulation, while the overall structure—a V-neck cardigan with button bands—involves standard garment assembly techniques suitable for knitters with some experience.
