This is a classic cable beanie with double rib band and optional pompom. It is very versatile and looks great with a range of colours and yarns to suit babies to pre-teens, and boys and girls alike. This beanie makes a fantastic present and will always impress!
Cables look complicated - but do not be scared, they are very easy! Creating these cables is only a matter of moving 3 stitches onto a cable needle, holding it in front of your work for three stitches, before knitting them off, and you have done it! My pattern includes photos showing how to use a cable needle, so give it a go and learn something new!
I have made many of these beanies with $2 yarn from my discount store, and they all turned out great. 1x 100gm ball of 8ply should be enough, if you are also making a pom pom in the largest size though you will need 2 balls. Adding a faux fur pompom also looks great!
Sizes available: 6 months, 1-2 years, 3-5 years, 6-11 years
The Dashing Cable Kids Beanie is a knitted hat designed for children ranging from 6 months to 11 years old. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a cozy, cable-detailed beanie with a pompom finish. The pattern includes four size options with corresponding head circumference measurements: 41cm (6 months), 47cm (1-2 years), 52cm (3-5 years), and 54cm (6-11 years).
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques to create structure and visual interest. The beanie begins with a double rib cuff, which provides elasticity and a professional finish at the base of the hat. The ribbed section is worked by alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x2 pattern, creating vertical columns that help the hat stay snug on a child's head.
The pattern incorporates cable stitching as a central design element, which requires the use of a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textures across the body of the beanie. Cable work adds both visual depth and structural integrity to the finished garment. The transition from the ribbed cuff to the main cable pattern involves strategic increases worked into the rib section to expand the stitch count from the initial cast-on to the required number for the cable motif.
The beanie is finished with a pompom, which adds a playful touch appropriate for children's wear and serves as a decorative crowning element.
The Dashing Cable Kids Beanie is designed to be worked with 8-ply (DK weight) yarn in 100% acrylic, making it durable, easy-care, and suitable for children's garments. Only 1 ball of yarn (approximately 210 meters of yardage) is required to complete the beanie in any of the four sizes, excluding the pompom.
The knitting needles required are 4mm needles for the main fabric and 3.5mm needles for the ribbed cuff section. The smaller needle size used for the rib creates a tighter, more elastic edge that helps the hat maintain its shape. A 4mm cable needle is essential for executing the cable pattern, allowing stitches to be held temporarily while working cable crossings. The pattern also calls for a pompom to complete the finished hat.
Achieving the correct tension is critical for proper fit, particularly in children's garments. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches by 30 rows over 10 centimeters when worked in stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size as needed to reach the correct gauge before beginning the project.
The pattern begins with casting on 86 stitches on 4mm needles, then switching to 3.5mm needles to work the double rib cuff for 4.5 centimeters. The ribbing is then continued on 4mm needles until the cuff measures 7 centimeters total. An increase row follows, which strategically adds stitches to transition from the ribbed section into the cable pattern, bringing the stitch count to 105 stitches.
