This pattern is the latest of four knit & crochet washcloths that I've posted, and my second favorite after the Knot Another Washcloth pattern.
This pattern uses the daisy stitch, which to me is an easier version of the lotus flower stitch. If you've never done these stitches, the key is not to knit too tightly.
These really knit up pretty quickly. If you get started, you could make quite a gift stash!
The Daisy Stitch Washcloth is a beginner-friendly knitting project that produces two finished hand-knit washcloths, each measuring 10.5 inches by 10.5 inches. This downloadable PDF pattern combines knitting techniques with a crochet finishing edge to create functional, decorative dishcloths suitable for kitchen or bathroom use.
This pattern yields a pair of square washcloths featuring a distinctive daisy stitch texture throughout the knitted fabric. The washcloths are finished with a single crochet edge that provides a neat, durable border. These are practical items designed for everyday use in washing dishes or hands, made from absorbent cotton yarn.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows equal to 4 inches when worked in stocking stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the washcloths to finish at the intended 10.5-inch square dimensions.
The Daisy Stitch Washcloth employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:
The washcloth begins with casting on 49 stitches using Size 6 knitting needles. The pattern alternates between rows of knit stitches and rows featuring the daisy stitch motif. Row 1 consists of knitting all stitches, establishing the foundation. Row 2 introduces the daisy stitch pattern, beginning with a knit stitch, then repeating the daisy stitch technique across the row. Row 3 returns to knitting all stitches. Row 4 combines knit and purl stitches with additional daisy stitch repeats, creating a structured pattern repeat that builds the textured fabric.
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those looking to expand their stitch repertoire. While the daisy stitch technique requires careful attention to the three-stitch manipulation and yarn over execution, the overall pattern structure is straightforward and builds confidence in fundamental knitting skills.
The Daisy Stitch Washcloth combines two primary fiber crafts: knitting and crochet. The main fabric is constructed entirely through hand knitting, utilizing flat needles to create rows of fabric. Once the knitted washcloths are complete, a crochet hook and single crochet stitch are used to add a finished edge, a common technique for securing and neatening the perimeter of knitted projects.
