According to historical records, during the reign of Malcolm I (A.D. 938-958), Norse invaders attempting to wade through a castle moat in darkness encountered cotton thistles instead of water, their painful contact with the spiny plants alerting the garrison and leading to the invaders' defeat. The thistle traditionally used for Scotland's emblem is identified as the Cotton Thistle (Onopordon Acanthium).
