Christmas Tree Advent Calendar Knitting Pattern – Schachenmayr Design 5520

This free downloadable PDF knitting pattern (Design 5520) from Schachenmayr, published under the Coats PLC copyright, guides you through creating a charming Christmas Tree Advent Calendar — known in German as Adventskalender "Tannenbaum". The finished decoration takes the form of a layered, three-dimensional knitted Christmas tree built from a series of stuffed triangular sections stacked to create a tiered, festive centrepiece. As an advent calendar, it is designed to hold small gifts or treats, making it both a decorative and interactive holiday project.

What Is Being Made

The project produces a freestanding or hanging Christmas tree decoration constructed from multiple knitted squares, each folded diagonally to form a stuffed triangle. These triangles are assembled in descending size order to mimic the tiered silhouette of a traditional Christmas tree. The design is intended as an advent calendar, meaning small pockets, parcels, or ornaments can be attached to or tucked within the tree's layers to count down the days to Christmas. This makes it a wonderfully tactile and reusable alternative to paper advent calendars.

Techniques Used

  • Flat knitting — each square is worked flat in rows to a specified width and length
  • Folding and seaming — each completed square is folded diagonally to create a triangle, with the right sides placed together
  • Crochet seaming — the side edges of each triangle are joined using a crochet hook, a technique that creates a neat and sturdy seam along the edges
  • Stuffing — before the final seam is closed, each triangle is lightly filled with toy stuffing or a similar material to give the tree sections a soft, three-dimensional form
  • Casting on and binding off — standard knitting construction methods are used throughout

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (glatt rechts / stockinette stitch) — the entire fabric of each square is worked in stocking stitch, producing a smooth, even surface that folds cleanly and holds its shape well when stuffed
  • Crochet slip stitch or joining stitch — used along the seam edges when closing the triangles after folding

Construction of the Tree Tiers

The tree is built from four knitted squares of graduating sizes, each worked in Schachenmayr Brazilia yarn on needles size 6–7 (metric). The squares are knitted to the following approximate dimensions:

  • First square (largest tier): approximately 44 cm wide, cast on 54 stitches and knit 44 cm in stocking stitch
  • Second square: approximately 38 cm wide, cast on 48 stitches and knit 38 cm in stocking stitch
  • Third square: approximately 33 cm wide, cast on 42 stitches and knit 33 cm in stocking stitch
  • Fourth square (smallest tier): approximately 28 cm wide, worked in the same manner as the preceding squares

Each square is then folded along its diagonal with the right sides facing inward, the side edges are crocheted together leaving a gap for stuffing, the triangle is lightly filled, and the remaining seam is closed. This process is repeated for all four squares before the tiers are assembled into the finished tree shape.

Materials

  • Yarn: Schachenmayr Brazilia — a chunky, textured yarn used for the main tree body; the pattern also references Regia 4 Ply 50g and Regia 6 Ply yarns, covering a range of weights from 4 ply through DK to Aran weight
  • Knitting needles: size 6–7 mm recommended for the Brazilia yarn sections
