Cell Phone or Tablet Cozy in Caron Simply Soft – Crochet Pattern by Lorna Miser
This free, downloadable PDF crochet pattern by designer Lorna Miser guides crafters through creating protective cozies for cell phones, tablets, and iPads using Caron Simply Soft yarn. Rated as a beginner difficulty project, it is an ideal starting point for those new to crochet while still producing a polished, practical accessory. The finished cozies shield electronic devices from scratches and everyday wear, and they also make a thoughtful, handmade gift for anyone who loves their tech gadgets.
What Is Being Made
The pattern includes instructions for three sizes of device cozy:
- Cell Phone Cozy – measuring 2.5" × 5" (6.25 cm × 12.5 cm)
- Tablet Cozy – measuring 6" × 9.5" (15 cm × 24 cm)
- iPad Cozy – measuring 7.5" × 9.5" (19 cm × 24 cm)
Each cozy features a fold-over flap with a button-and-chain-loop closure to keep the device securely inside. An optional crocheted strap is also included, allowing the cozy to be worn or carried crossbody-style.
Techniques Used
- Working back and forth in rows – The cozy is crocheted flat as a single rectangular panel, then folded and seamed along the sides to form the pocket.
- Seaming – Once the panel is folded to the correct depth, the side edges are sewn together to create the pouch shape, leaving the top portion as a flap.
- Button loop closure – A crochet chain is attached to the center of the flap and looped around a button sewn to the front of the pocket, providing a secure but easy-to-open fastening.
- Optional strap construction – Yarn is joined at the fold of the cozy, a foundation chain is worked to the desired strap length, and then double crochet stitches are worked back across the chain to create a sturdy, neat strap. The strap is joined at both ends of the cozy fold and secured with a button.
- Weaving in ends – Standard finishing technique to secure all yarn tails neatly inside the fabric.
Stitches Used
The entire cozy is worked in the Tilted Stitch, a beginner-friendly textured stitch that creates an attractive, slightly diagonal surface pattern. The stitch is worked over a multiple of 3 stitches plus 3 and combines two basic crochet stitches in a repeating cluster:
- Chain (ch) – Used for the foundation chain and for the button loop closure and optional strap.
- Double crochet (dc) – Worked in pairs as part of each Tilted Stitch cluster, and also used throughout the optional strap.
- Single crochet (sc) – Anchors each cluster of the Tilted Stitch, alternating with the double crochet pairs to create the signature tilted texture.
The Tilted Stitch pattern is established in Row 1 and then repeated in a single, consistent Row 2 for the entire length of the piece, making it very easy to memorize and work rhythmically — perfect for beginner crocheters building confidence with stitch combinations.
