What Is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a pair of adorable sitting cats, each measuring 17cm in finished sitting height. The design produces two distinct feline toys suitable for display, gifting, or play. The pattern is created by independent designer Sachiyo Ishii and is available as a digital PDF download.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to bring the cats to life:

• Intarsia method is used to work the cat heads, allowing for color changes and detailed facial features
• Mattress stitch is used for seaming, worked with the right side facing to create invisible, professional-looking seams
• Long ends are left at the beginning and end of sections for sewing pieces together

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for an intermediate skill level:

• Stocking stitch (St st) forms the main fabric structure
• Knit (K) and purl (P) stitches create the base fabric
• Knit front and back (Kfb) increases stitches for shaping
• Knit two together (K2tog) and purl two together (P2tog) decreases for shaping the cat forms
• Repeats (Rep) are used throughout to establish pattern sequences

Materials and Yarn

The cats are knitted using Rowan Alpaca Classic yarn in DK weight. This yarn blend contains 43% cotton and 57% alpaca, providing a soft, luxurious texture ideal for toys. Each cat requires less than one ball of yarn, making this an economical project.

The pattern includes four colorways of Rowan Alpaca Classic:

Knitting needles required are 3.5mm straight needles. The recommended tension is 25 stitches by 36 rows over 10 x 10cm in stocking stitch, with a yardage of 120m per 25g ball.

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and needles, the following materials are needed to complete the cats:

• Two pairs of 9mm safety eyes for each cat
• Small amount of pink 4-ply yarn for details such as noses or inner ears
• Toy stuffing for filling the knitted forms (dark-colored stuffing is recommended for the black cat to prevent show-through)
