Borage Children's Cable Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern – Valley Yarns Haydenville Bulky
The Borage Sweater, pattern #943, is a children's pullover knitting design by Julie Turjoman, published as part of the WEBS Modern Kids collection. This intermediate-level pattern produces a cozy, practical, and stylish pullover for children, sized from 1–2 years through 10–12 years. The design is part of a line focused on easy wear and easy care, making it an ideal project for knitters who want a functional garment that stands up to the demands of an active child's wardrobe.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a seamedchildren's pullover sweater with a striking beefy cable panel on the front and smooth, fast-knitting stockinette stitch on the back and sleeves. The finished chest measurements range from 22 inches to 32 inches, with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease built in for comfortable, relaxed fit. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size 6–8 years in Color 31 Blue.
Techniques Used
- Seamed construction: The sweater is worked flat in separate pieces that are then seamed together, making it an excellent project for knitters comfortable with finishing techniques such as seaming with a tapestry needle.
- Worked flat: All pieces are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round, allowing the cable pattern to be worked on both right-side and wrong-side rows with clear row-by-row instructions.
- Short-row shaping: The pattern uses Wrap & Turn (W&T) short-row technique for shaping, adding a professional, smooth finish to shaped sections of the garment.
- Cable knitting: The front features a prominent cable panel using both Right Cross Braid Side Cable and Left Cross Braid Side Cable stitch patterns, each worked over a multiple of 6 stitches in a 4-row repeat. These cables frame a central braid-like texture that gives the sweater its bold, tactile visual interest.
- Decreases and increases: Standard shaping techniques including K2tog (knit 2 together), SSK (slip, slip, knit), and M1L (Make 1 Left) are used throughout for armhole, sleeve, and neckline shaping.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch – used for the back, sleeves, and as the background fabric of the front piece, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric.
- K1/P1 Rib – used for welts, cuffs, and neckband edging, providing a neat, stretchy border that keeps edges tidy and helps the garment maintain its shape.
- 2/2 Right Cross (2/2 RC) – a cable crossing where stitches are held to the back on a cable needle, creating a right-leaning twist that forms part of the Right Cross Braid Side Cable panel.
- 2/2 Left Cross (2/2 LC) – a cable crossing where stitches are held to the front on a cable needle, creating a left-leaning twist that forms part of the Left Cross Braid Side Cable panel.
- Right Cross Braid Side Cable – a 4-row repeating cable pattern worked over a multiple of 6 stitches, combining knit and purl columns with a 2/2 right cross on Row 3.
- Left Cross Braid Side Cable – a 4-row repeating mirror-image cable pattern also worked over a multiple of 6 stitches, combining knit and purl columns with a 2/2 left cross on Row 3.
