Bats and Pumpkins Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry in Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK

This intermediate-level knitting pattern by designer Amanda Berry is a downloadable PDF available from Deramores. It guides knitters through creating a charming collection of Halloween-themed knitted toys, specifically a set of decorative and playful bats and pumpkins. The pattern produces three distinct finished pieces: a Large Pumpkin, a Small Pumpkin, and a Bat, making it a wonderfully versatile project for the spooky season. Please note that the finished toys are not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts.

Finished Sizes

Each design knits up to a specific finished size, giving knitters a clear idea of the final result:

  • Large Pumpkin: approximately 13cm tall and 14cm wide
  • Small Pumpkin: approximately 7cm tall and 9cm wide
  • Bat: approximately 13cm tall and 19cm wide with wings fully stretched out

Yarn and Materials

The pattern is written specifically for Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK yarn, a reliable double knitting weight yarn known for its softness and durability — qualities that make it particularly well-suited to knitted toys that need to hold their shape. Four colourways are used across the designs:

  • Yarn A: Paprika (1 x 100g ball)
  • Yarn B: Peridot (1 x 100g ball)
  • Yarn C: Smoke (1 x 100g ball)
  • Yarn D: Ebony (1 x 100g ball)

The warm, autumnal Paprika and fresh Peridot are perfectly suited to the pumpkin designs, while the moody Smoke and deep Ebony bring the bat to life with atmospheric effect.

Needles Required

  • 3mm straight knitting needles for the main fabric
  • Two 3mm double pointed needles (DPNs) for working smaller sections and shaping

Tension

The pattern calls for a tension of 28 stitches x 36 rows = 10cm x 10cm, measured over stockinette stitch using 3mm needles. Achieving the correct tension is especially important in toy knitting, as it affects the final dimensions of each piece and ensures the fabric is firm enough to contain the toy filling securely.

Techniques and Stitches Used

Rated as an intermediate knitting pattern, this design is ideal for knitters who are comfortable with the basics and ready to develop their skills further. The techniques involved in constructing these three-dimensional toys include:

  • Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch used throughout, creating a smooth, even fabric
  • Kfb (knit into front and back) — a common increase stitch used to shape the rounded forms of the pumpkins and bat body
  • Working with double pointed needles (DPNs) — used for knitting in the round or working on small, tight sections
  • Shaping and three-dimensional construction — the pieces are knitted flat or in sections and then assembled to create fully stuffed, sculptural toys
  • Embroidery — white embroidery thread or floss is used to stitch the bat's mouth, adding expressive detail to the finished toy

Additional Materials and Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, several additional materials are required to complete the finished toys. These extras are what transform the knitted fabric into characterful, fully realised toy figures:

  • Toy filling — approximately 150g is needed to stuff all three pieces
  • Tapestry or yarn needle — for seaming and finishing
  • Two 22mm toy safety
