Product Description
Gradients transition along a long arrow shape for a fun scarf or dramatic wrap. Two ombré colourways are worked in a simple intarsia pattern. Tassels dangle from each of the corners.
Originally designed for an ombré wool yarn and it would be equally effective in a plant-based fibre.
The scarf size uses one ball each of two different colourways and the shawl size requires two balls each. Plan the direction you want each colourway to progress. You many need to begin with the centre of one ball and the outside of the other.
For the larger shawl, join the second ball of each colour beginning with the same colour as the first ball finished. Because there will be an excess of this colour in the centre of the shawl, the tassels should be made from this colour.
Archer Scarf and Shawl by Holli Yeoh
What is Being Made
The Archer Scarf and Shawl is a versatile knitted accessory available in two sizes: a scarf measuring 12 x 67 inches (30 x 170 cm) or a larger shawl measuring 21 x 85 inches (53.5 x 216 cm). The design features a distinctive long arrow shape with gradient color transitions that create a dramatic visual effect. This piece works equally well as a functional everyday scarf or as a statement wrap, making it a flexible addition to any wardrobe.
Design and Color Work
The Archer design showcases two ombré colorways worked using a simple intarsia pattern technique. The gradients transition smoothly along the arrow-shaped silhouette, creating visual interest and movement throughout the piece. The pattern is shown in the Coho and Cochinilla colorways, demonstrating how the color blocking enhances the arrow motif. Decorative tassels dangle from each of the four corners, adding a playful finishing touch to the completed accessory.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project is worked on the bias, which creates the angled arrow shape and allows the gradient colors to flow directionally across the fabric. The primary stitch used throughout is Garter Stitch, a fundamental knitting technique that creates a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter Stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it an accessible choice for intermediate knitters while still producing an elegant finished fabric.
The intarsia color work technique is employed to transition between the two ombré colorways. Intarsia involves working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections, creating clean color blocks without the floats that would result from stranding. This method is ideal for the large gradient areas in the Archer design and maintains the fabric's drape and flexibility.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: Freia Fine Handpainted Ombré Fingering weight yarn is used for this project. Each ball contains 430 yards (395 meters) and weighs 100 grams, composed of 100% Merino Wool. The yarn is hand-painted, contributing to the natural ombré effect that enhances the gradient transitions in the design. For the scarf size, 430 yards each of main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) are required. The shawl size requires 860 yards each of MC and CC, doubling the yardage for the larger finished piece.
Needles and Notions: The project calls for 4.5 mm (US 7) needles, which are appropriately sized for the fingering-weight yarn. A stitch marker helps track progress during the bias construction. A yarn needle is essential for weaving in ends and attaching the corner tassels. A digital scale is optional but helpful for managing yarn quantities during the intarsia color work. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 42 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) when worked in Garter Stitch and blocked. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The pattern provides two distinct size options, allowing knitters to choose between the more compact scarf or the more dramatic shawl wrap, both featuring the same arrow design.
