Product Description
Allegro is an unusual, wrap around top, with ribbed waistband and open back. This top is extremely lightweight due to its open lace stitch. It is very easy to make and knits up really fast, with very little finishing needed. A superb piece to wear over a summer dress or t-shirt with jeans or as a layering piece for winter. Allegro is great for protecting your neck and upper back against chilly evenings and is so light, you almost forget you are wearing it. (Measurements are all approximate as Allegro shawl is very flexible and each given size can easily accommodate a smaller or larger size.).
Needle size: 7mm straight: 4mm circular.
Tension: 10sts and 12 rows to 10cm square over Lace Stitch using 7mm needles.
Photographed in the colour Alpaca Sand. Knitted in Purl Alpaca designs Medium 100% alpaca yarn.

Allegro Shawl by Kari-Helene Rane
What is Being Made
The Allegro Shawl is a knitted wrap-style shawl designed by Kari-Helene Rane. This garment is available in five sizes ranging from extra small to extra large, with finished waist measurements of 52 cm to 92 cm (20 to 36 inches). The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size Medium using a yarn shade called Alpaca Sand.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using the knitting craft. The Allegro Shawl is classified as a beginner-level design, making it accessible to knitters who are new to shawl construction. The pattern emphasizes neat finishing techniques, with particular attention paid to row-end edges, which form the actual finished edges of the garment. The designer recommends sewing in all ends neatly and using spit splicing wherever possible to maintain a polished appearance and prevent edge rolling.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in this shawl is the Lace Stripe Pattern, which uses a 2-row repeat and works over any number of stitches. This pattern incorporates a specialized technique called the elongated knit stitch. On the wrong side (Row 1), the elongated knit stitch is formed by inserting the right-hand needle into each stitch as if to knit, then winding the yarn twice around the needle and pulling both loops through to create a new stitch. On the right side (Row 2), each stitch is purled in the normal manner, allowing the extra loop to slip off the needle and form the characteristic elongated appearance. This two-row repeat creates a textured, lace-like stripe throughout the shawl.
Materials and Specifications
The Allegro Shawl is knitted using Purl Alpaca Medium, a yarn that is 100% alpaca fiber. Depending on the size being made, the project requires between 5 and 7 balls of yarn, with each ball containing 77 meters of yarn per 50 grams. The pattern specifies a yarn weight category of aran. Knitting is worked on 7 mm needles. The recommended tension is 10 stitches and 12 rows to a 10 cm square when measured on these needles, which helps ensure the finished garment achieves the correct dimensions across all available sizes.
