Pattern #1308 Ascella – Women's Pullover Top Knitting Pattern by Valley Yarns

The Ascella is a beautifully understated women's pullover top designed by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns, pattern number #1308. Worked in the luxurious Valley Yarns Westhampton, a 100% Pima Cotton DK-weight yarn, this design celebrates clean, spare lines and subtle stitch detailing that let the yarn's sumptuous hand take center stage. The result is a garment that is, as the designer describes, deceptively simple, elegant, and classic — equally at home in a professional setting, on a casual date night, or paired with everyday jeans.

Design Overview

The Ascella is a body-skimming, high hip-length pullover tee featuring a V-neck and knitted-on cap sleeves, making it an ideal warm-weather wardrobe staple. Its relaxed yet polished silhouette is designed to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease, offering a comfortable, flattering fit across a wide range of body types. The subtle texture pattern woven throughout the fabric adds quiet visual interest without overwhelming the garment's refined simplicity.

Sizes and Finished Measurements

  • Sizes available: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL
  • Finished Bust: 33¾ (37¾, 41¾, 45¾, 49¾) (53¾, 57¾, 61¾, 65¾) inches
  • Finished Hip: 33 (37, 41, 45, 49) (53, 57, 61, 65) inches
  • The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size S

The generous size range makes this pattern accessible to a broad spectrum of knitters, and the inclusive grading ensures that the elegant proportions of the design are maintained across all sizes.

Skill Level and Techniques

This pattern is listed as Advanced Beginner in the original PDF, though the product attributes note it as Intermediate — making it an excellent next-step project for knitters who have mastered the basics and are ready to explore more refined garment construction. The Ascella is worked using a combination of flat knitting and knitting in the round, which means knitters will gain experience with both construction methods within a single project.

  • Worked flat: Portions of the garment, such as the body panels, are knitted back and forth in rows, a foundational technique for garment construction.
  • Worked in the round: Circular needles are used for seamless sections, giving the finished fabric a clean, polished appearance with fewer seams to sew up.
  • Knitted-on cap sleeves: Rather than being seamed or picked up separately, the cap sleeves are integrated directly into the knitting process, a technique that creates a tidy, professional finish.
  • Texture pattern: A subtle stitch pattern is incorporated throughout the body, adding dimension and interest. Stitch markers — including 4 in a unique color — are used to track the texture pattern repeats.
  • V-neck shaping: Neckline decreases create the classic V-neck, requiring attention to symmetry and shaping on both sides of the work.

Stitches Used

While the full stitch list is detailed within the downloadable PDF, the Ascella incorporates a combination of fundamental and textural knitting stitches. Knitters can expect to work with:

  • Knit and purl stitches — the building blocks of the fabric and texture pattern
  • Decrease stitches — used for V-neck and cap sleeve shaping
  • Texture pattern stitches — subtle combinations of knit and purl arranged to create the design's signature surface interest

Pattern has serious shortcomings

Design is pretty but once you start working it becomes clear the pattern has serious shortcomings. Queried with Lovecrafts after several days of them being unable to get it rectified they refunded me. Too late for my project. They then asked me to give them all the details of what was wrong with it. Not my job!
