Pattern #1054 Bartlett: Sleeveless V-Neck Tunic Knitting Pattern for Women by Julie Turjoman

The Bartlett is a beautifully designed sleeveless V-neck tunic created by designer Julie Turjoman and published as pattern #1054. Worked in the luxurious Valley Yarns Westfield, this pattern delivers a relaxed, flattering silhouette that is equally at home as a standalone piece or a stylish layering option during cooler months. With practical pockets, an elegant V-neckline, and an all-over ribbed texture that creates a clean vertical line, the Bartlett is a wardrobe essential for anyone who loves functional yet refined knitwear.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a sleeveless V-neck tunic for women, designed with a relaxed fit and built-in A-line shaping for a graceful silhouette. The tunic features side pockets, making it as practical as it is stylish. It is available in a generous size range — XS through 5XL — with finished bust measurements spanning from 33 inches to 66 inches and hip measurements from 36½ inches to 69½ inches. The design is intended to be worn with 2 to 4 inches of positive ease, though knitters who prefer a closer fit are advised to work one size smaller. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S.

Construction and Techniques

The Bartlett tunic is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat method, meaning the knitting begins at the lower hem and progresses upward toward the shoulders. The garment is worked in two separate flat pieces — a Front and a Back — which are then seamed together at the shoulders. This traditional seamed construction gives the finished garment excellent structure and durability, and the shoulder seams provide a clean, professional finish.

  • Bottom-up construction: Both the Front and Back pieces begin at the cast-on edge and are worked upward, allowing knitters to easily adjust length before the armhole shaping begins.
  • Worked flat (back and forth in rows): Rather than knitting in the round, each piece is worked on circular needles back and forth, which is a common approach for seamed garments and allows for precise stitch pattern alignment on both right-side and wrong-side rows.
  • Seamed finishing: The Front and Back are joined at the shoulders after knitting is complete, a technique that adds stability to the garment's structure.
  • A-line shaping: The tunic incorporates A-line shaping through strategic increases and decreases along the sides, creating a subtle flare from the hip to the bust that flatters a wide range of body types.
  • V-neck shaping: The neckline is shaped with decreases on both sides of the center front, creating the classic V-neck silhouette.
  • Armhole and V-neck ribbing: After the main pieces are seamed, ribbing is picked up and worked around both the armhole openings and the V-neckline using smaller circular needles, giving the garment a neat, polished edge.
  • Pocket construction: The pattern includes pockets, adding a practical design element to this casual weekend tunic.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the body of the Bartlett tunic is the Seeded Rib stitch, a textured knit-purl combination that creates clean, flattering vertical lines across the fabric. Seeded Rib is a classic stitch pattern that combines the vertical elongation of ribbing with a subtle seed-stitch texture, giving the fabric visual interest while remaining easy to memorize and work rhythmically. The stitch pattern is consistent across both the Front and Back pieces.

  • Seeded Rib stitch: The main body stitch pattern, worked over both right-side and wrong-side rows to create the signature vertical texture.
  • Knit (K): A foundational stitch used throughout the pattern.
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used in shaping, including V-neck and A-line shaping.
  • Knit Front and Back (Kfb): An increase stitch
