Yarn weight as a starting point

Weight governs tension, and tension governs everything else. 4 ply on 3.25mm gives fine fabric and long projects; DK on 4mm is the British all-rounder; aran on 5mm is faster and warmer; chunky and super chunky on 6mm and above turn a hat into an evening's work. If you have yarn already, filter by its weight and the library shrinks to things you can start tonight. If you are buying yarn for a specific pattern, check the ball band tension against the pattern's before you commit to a garment quantity.
