The appeal of knitting big

Super chunky yarn is the fastest route from cast on to finished object in the whole craft. On 10mm needles a scarf can be done in an evening and a throw over a weekend, and every stitch is large enough to see clearly, which is why it is the weight most often recommended to absolute beginners and to anyone whose eyesight makes 4 ply a struggle. The fabric is thick, warm and inherently textured, so plain garter stitch or a simple double crochet is usually all a design needs.

What suits the weight

• Blankets and throws: the flagship project, worked flat in garter or moss stitch, often on a long circular needle to hold the width.
• Oversized cardigans and jumpers: quick to knit, warm to wear, best in a relaxed shape.
• Hats, cowls and scarves: single-skein projects and reliable last-minute gifts.
• Home accessories: floor cushions, poufs and baskets that hold their shape thanks to the sheer thickness.
• Arm and hand knitting: the very heaviest roving yarns can be worked without needles at all.

Needles, hooks and tension

Most super chunky yarns call for 8mm to 12mm needles, with hooks in a similar range. A long circular needle is easier than straights for anything wide, simply because a metre of thick fabric is heavy to balance on two sticks. Tension is measured over very few stitches, so a small error has a large effect: one stitch out over 10cm can change a blanket's width by a considerable margin. Swatch, count carefully, and remember that fabric this thick will not shrink or grow much in blocking, so what you knit is what you get.

Fibre and how it wears

Super chunky merino is gloriously soft and warm, and it pills more readily than a firmer blend because the fibres are loosely spun for loft. Wool blends and acrylic give a harder-wearing, lighter and usually washable fabric, which is the right call for a family blanket. Roving yarn, barely spun at all, gives the dramatic giant-stitch look but is fragile and best kept for pieces that will be admired more than dragged about. Weigh up how the finished item will actually be used before you choose.

Quantity and cost

Thick yarn eats metreage. A full-size super chunky throw can take a surprising number of balls, so work out the yardage from your pattern before you buy and get it all in one dye lot. Because ball bands vary a lot in weight at this thickness, always compare metres rather than grams. If you run short mid-blanket, a new dye lot will show as a band across a plain expanse.

Finishing and care

Weave ends in with a large blunt needle, splitting the plies if the yarn is thick enough, so the tail cannot pull free under the weight of the fabric. Wash by hand in cool water unless the yarn is superwash, support the wet weight with both hands as you lift it, and dry flat; a wet super chunky blanket is heavy enough to stretch itself out of shape if hung. De-pill a soft merino piece gently with a comb rather than a razor.
