A dress is one of the more satisfying things to have on the needles because the shape is simple but the finished object looks considered. Choosing a size that will actually be worn

Toddler sizing is usually given by chest measurement and finished length; measure the child rather than trusting the age on the label, because two-year-olds vary enormously. Yarn, needles and quantity

Dresses introduce shaping gently. You will use increases to flare a skirt, decreases to shape a yoke or armhole, and a picked-up neckband or button band at the finish. Buttonholes matter more here than in most garments because a baby dress lives or dies on how easily it goes on: work them at least a stitch larger than you think, and check the button passes through before sewing all six on. Seaming is mostly mattress stitch up the sides, which is invisible when done on stocking stitch.

Finishing and care

Block the finished dress before sewing on buttons; it settles the skirt hem and opens any lace. Sew ends in along seams where they will not rub against skin.
