Cowl Knitting Patterns

More than a scarf, less commitment than a jumper

A cowl sits in the most useful gap in knitwear. It covers the neck without the loose ends of a scarf, it does not flatten your hair like a hat, and it can be pulled up over the chin on the walk to the bus. For a knitter its real appeal is scale: a cowl is big enough to be a proper piece of fabric — so cables, lace repeats and two-colour patterns look like themselves — and small enough that if it goes wrong you have lost a weekend, not a winter. This collection covers close-fitting collars, generous loops long enough to double, hooded snoods, buttoned neck warmers and children's versions.

Choosing a shape

• Close collar: roughly 50–55cm around, sitting snugly under a coat. Warmest, and the least yarn.
• Single loose loop: 60–70cm, drapes on the shoulders, good for showing off lace or a gradient.
• Doubled infinity cowl: 110–140cm, wraps twice, giving two layers at the neck without bulk at the back.
• Hooded snood: covers head and neck in one, a genuinely practical pattern for cold, windy walks.
• Buttoned neck warmer: knitted flat and fastened, so it goes on without disturbing hair or glasses.

Yarn weight and how much you need

Chunky and aran yarns give the fastest, cosiest results — a chunky cowl can be finished in an evening or two on 6–8mm needles and often needs only 150–250 metres. DK gives a more refined fabric for cables and takes around 250–400 metres. 4 ply and lace weights are for drapey, wearable-indoors cowls and can want 400 metres or more despite weighing almost nothing. Wool and wool blends are the sensible default: elastic, warm and easy to block. Alpaca is warmer still and drapes heavily, which is lovely in a long loop and too floppy in a close collar. Cotton and linen make good spring cowls but have no spring back, so avoid tight ribbed edges in them.

Knitting in the round versus flat

Most cowls are worked in the round on a circular needle, which means no seaming and no purl rows in stocking stitch. Use a circular whose length is a little shorter than the cowl's circumference — a 40cm or 60cm cable for most — and place a marker at the join so you can count rounds. Watch the very first round for twists; a twisted cast-on is the single most common cowl disaster, and there is no fixing it later. Flat cowls avoid that risk entirely and are grafted or seamed at the end, and an intentional half-turn before joining gives you a Möbius that lies beautifully on the shoulders.

Good techniques to learn on a cowl

Because a cowl is a tube with no shaping, it is the ideal place to practise. Brioche produces a squashy, reversible double fabric that is perfect around the neck and much easier to learn over 100 stitches of straight knitting than in a garment. Stranded colourwork is the same: no shaping to disrupt the chart, and any tension unevenness blocks out. Cables need no extra tools if you are comfortable slipping stitches. Lace works well as long as the pattern is reversible or the wrong side is not visible when worn.

Edges, blocking and care

A rolling edge on stocking stitch is not a flaw unless you did not plan for it. If you want a flat edge, work three or four centimetres of ribbing, garter or seed stitch at each end, and cast off loosely — a tight cast-off will pull the top edge in and make the cowl uncomfortable. Block by soaking, squeezing out in a towel and laying flat, folded at the sides, or over a balloon or upturned bowl for a rounded finish. Hand-wash wool cowls; they need it less often than you think, and airing after wear is usually enough.
